Hi everybody,

I have 5 year old computer which is a Hansol H750.

It's been ok over the years and only seems to have probs when ISP's have been changed. Been with Virgin Media for the past year however and no probs until recently, but not down to ISP.

I have recently gone wireless as we have changed things around in the house becuase my wife is a childminder.

The wireless card and router are both Netgear, so shouldn't be a problem with that, although the signal from the router is weak (might up date that depending on what you guys think).

Since the change the system has a terrible habit of freezing (sometimes every few minutes) and I have to turn off manually and then get the blue screen disk check (crashing I guesss) when turned back on.

I have purchased a registry booster update, which hasn't done a great deal and whilst my system runs on low RAM, I have just purchased 1GB to help, but obviously I don't think that is the problem, just thought it would help for the future.

My computer wiz at work advises that the wireless card may not be compatible with the older drivers on my system and whilst a little research has confirmed that this could be the problem, I seem to have a bit of a nightmare finding out how to clarify what to do to update and download new drivers. Tried the Netgear website, but no that helpful (or I am just a bit dim).

Many sites offer free downloads and scans etc.. but I'm not clear as to what I should be purchasing (if anything) from whom or where, or, even if the driver is really the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Hi Rick,

Which router and wireless adapter do do you have - so for example DG834GT V3 and W111 V2 etc.

Also, is your computer up to date with Service Pack 3?

I have purchased a registry booster update

What product did you buy?

I think you've worked out that registry tools seldom do what they suggest and are best avoided.

Hi,

the router is Netgear WGR614v9 and the card is WG311v3,,I'm sorry but I have no idea what service pack3 is, let alone if I have it or not.

The Registry Booster purchased was Uniblue..this was only yesterday however...long after the problem arose..

I've added the contents of your PM to the thread - other people may want to know what you were using and can only help if they have all the info.

Service Pack 3 is the roll up of all of the latest updates for Windows, put together in one pack.

To find out how updated your PC is, click Start, then Run, them type msinfo32 and press Enter.

After a few moments a dialogue box will come up and at the top it will tell you something like Microsoft Windows XP Home, underneath that is the update info, so mine says 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600.

If you are not at SP3, can you hook up your PC using a cable and run Windows Update. It will take a while, but it does need doing.

Hi again Tootech,

I have got Service Pack 3, the readings on my computer are the same as on yours.

Thats good news....

The driver for your wireless card is here:

Answer - Netgear WG311 V3 Driver

Best thing to do is uninstall the current driver, reboot and install this one. Then you know you are up to date all round.

Also, try only installing the driver - not the Netgear wireless client, let Windows deal with the connecting to your network.

Its a PCI card, and they tend to be less trouble than USB versions.

If it happens again, after you restart have a look in the Event Log, most problems before a system hangs are logged under Software or System.

Get to it through Control Panel>Administrative Tools.

Can I just ask you what security software you use - antivirus/firewall etc

pc /xp probs

Hi again Tootech,

as a matter of interest I have checked the event log which shows 2 separate errors as follows:

File system structure on the disk is corrupt and unstable, please run the disk utility on Volume D.

The K service terminated via an uspecified error.

What do these mean and are they part of the problem?

No - when you have removed the drivers and restarted, Windows will tell you it has found new hardware - just cancel it and then install the up to date drivers.

The security I have is PC Guard and Norton

Can you just go through this a bit more. I know PC Guard is a Virgin Media security suite - do you have that and the Norton security installed?

If you do, one needs removing, infact I'd remove them both, as they may have messed each other up, and then install the one you want to use.

That could change things completely - your card may work properly then.

The K service terminated via an uspecified error

I think this is an error from something like the BBC or Channel 4 download service, its called Kontiki - does that sound right?

File system structure on the disk is corrupt and unstable, please run the disk utility on Volume D.

Thats a little bit worrying - is D drive some kind of recovery partition, or is where you store your data, or is it a seperate drive?

It may be worth running an error check on D drive, but I couldn't be sure until I know what it is used for.

XP problems freezing.

Hello again,

O.K..what I had installed as Norton was only the scanning part rather than the security which it covers..uninstalled that anyway.

No idea about Kontiki, it doesn't mean anything to me.

Had a look at the 'D' because again it means little to me..contained within are various tachnobabble type files (4) which make no sense to me.

Also there are files which state they are microsoft corporation products..silverlight..uac launcher and external installer all of which were installed on the same day in Jan in the early hours of one morning...no idea what they are.

And finally, there is a file containing a microsoft corp malicious software removal tool called mrt.exe,-p which I have run and which produces a no malicious software report, but also a file exists which cannot be opened..mrtstub.

Hope this helps identify what you need to know.

Finally, being a bit dim as stated earlier :o can you please run though how to uninstall the current driver to download the correct which you have kindly found for me.

Many thanks

Rick

Check Device Manager:

  • Right-Click My Computer and select Properties
  • Click on the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager
  • Right-Click on the wireless card and select uninstall
  • Restart the computer

Also, I think Netgear products install a program that needs removing.

Go to your Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Look for an entry in the list relating to Netgear - something like Netgear Wireless Utility.

Uninstall that too.

PC freezing in x/p

Hi Guys,

right, before I remove anything from add remove..what is shown there is Netgear pci adaptor..is this what you are referring to tootech?

Thats the one Rick.

When you restart your PC after uninstall, Windows will tell you it has found new hardware - just cancel that message, when you install the new drivers they will deal with it.

X/P Freezing Prob

Hi Chaps,

now I am just confused..

Did what you both said and uninstalled everything, but when I tried to go back in to download the new driver, I couldn't access the internet (I presume of course because there were no drivers).

Got them back via system restore, hence this response..what am I doing wrong?

Did you actually obtain the driver that TooTech requested in Post 6 at all?

Yes. First Download the driver and save it. Then do the uninstall. Then use the drivers you downloaded ;)

Installing Ram Module

Hello,

can anybody tell me how to install a Ram Module in to a Hansol 750 computer please.

I have taken the back off of the tower, but it looks like other parts need to be unscrewed to access the socket to install the DIMM and I'm a little dubious as to what I might do to the computer by unscrewing the wrong thing or installing the module in the wrong socket.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Rick

Is it possible that you are confusing your PC with the Monitor that you have Rick?

As far as research goes all Hansol make are Monitors.

Hi Wolfeymole,

do you know you are absolutely correct.

I had no idea that my monitor is a different make to my PC, is there somewhere that I can search on the system which will tell me exactly what I have got?

Many Thanks

Thanks Tootech,

it comes up with AMD Athlon XP on the Belarc search (nothing on the tower)..I presume this is what I'm looking for, right?

Tootech,

I'm looking at the Belarc Computer profile summary and it's stating no network drives detected...is this right?

Hi

Look on the tower, does it say HP or DELL and also if it says what model number.
