Windows Services will not start

Recommended Posts

I have a windows 2003 server that has Exchange running on it. Yesterday the

server started to freeze and upon reboot it hung on applying personal

settings. I restarted in safe mode and made sure that the APC service was

disabled. System rebooted after about 3 hours. Once restarted IIS would not

start and therefore exchange was not working. I ran msconfig and did a

diagnostic start up and they system started relatively quickly. I then

changed to normal startup and shut down the Server, upon restart none of the

services would start, message is Configuration Manager: plug and play service

or some other service is not running. The only service that is running is RPC

Server, but when I try to start the service it says that RPC server is not

running. I am at a loss here even my licenses in license manager disappeared.

The only new software was installed 6 weeks ago and that was symantec

protection for Exchange. I can't uninstall that as the windows installer

service is not running and I cannot start it.

Hello Todd,

Start in again in safe mode and look for errors in the event viewer and post

them here.

Best regards

cannot access the event logs in Safe Mode they are blank. I had been getting

a VBrun error, general network, but that was it.

Re: Windows Services will not start

Todd, we had the same problem with approximately 10 Exchange servers that we recently deployed. Intermittent freezes which typically occur during or immediately after a backup.

We have not yet determined the root cause but we found that if we revert Symantec back to version 10D it stops the freezes. Give that a shot for now and I will post here when we find a resolution.
