Hi everyone. It's my first time here so please be gentle with me:)

I have two questions:

a) How do I find a particular computer's IP address?

b) How do I use that information to block that computer from using our wireless network?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi kat,

Are you saying that you have a wireless network that doesn't have security set up and anyone can access it?

If that is the case, the best way to prevent access is setup up the wireless security.

Hi kat,

No Tootech, our network does have full security but we have recently become concerned by some of the contacts our 13 year old daughter has made. She has repeatedly been asked not to make contact with this person, whom we have reason to believe (in view of his previous criminal record) may be "grooming" her for the purpose of future sexual abuse.

Despite our requests, our daughter HAS maintained contact with this person and I now feel that I need to take stronger action... ie........ removing her internet access for a week or so.

I just need help in doing this because I dont know how to do it.

Is she making contact with this person through say Facebook or some thing like Yahoo Instant Messenger etc?

I see what you are saying, its a bit more serious than that.

First thoughts are to try a piece of software that limits web activity.

Cyberpatrol is one that I have used on occasion. It can block sites, prevent chat, limit Internet time between certain hours each day. Its all password protected too, so once set up only you as Administrator can change things.

I recommend also that you password protect any computer accounts that may be available, go through the whole lot to make it secure. Teenagers have a good sense of cutting corners, and finding ways around things, as I'm sure you know.

Have a look at it here, there's a 14 day trial which may suit you for a start.

Hi polkat;

I agree with Tootech that Cyberpatrol may be a great option.

Due to the fact that your daughter is 13 and the other person has a criminal history I highly suggest that you contact the authorities.

I don't know the laws wherever you are but this type of thing is not to be taken lightly.

Router?

Personally i would Block Sites/Ip's through a routers software. This can block out specific words and without any direct software less likely to be tamprered with. A router can be bought reasonably cheaply but not all routers provide this service. Depends on what your willing to pay. I have no experience of software versions however only blocked sites in a busness enviroment.

If Computers always worked i would be out of a job. This is why i love to hate computers. :)
