Guest Scott Townsend Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 A customer of ours wanted us to install 10GB of RAM in his Win2k3 SP1 on Dell Poweredge 2800. Looking around it seems that I can use the /PAE switch in the Boot.ini file. That got me from 3.2gb to 4.0gb Is there a way to use more then the 4GB of RAM? BIOS Sees all 10GB Thanks, Scott<-
Guest John John Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Re: More then 4GB of RAM on Win2k3 SP1 on Dell Poweredge 2800 You need Server 2003 Enterprise version or better to use more than 4gigs of RAM, or you need the 64-bit version. BIOS Sees all 10GB Requires 64-bit OS. No way around it. Enterprise is supposed to have the ability to see it but I don't know that to be a fact. 32-bit OSes are limited to 4GB. Linux is supposed to be able to page out anything beyond 4GB but it's a kludge. - Thee Chicago Wolf
Guest Morgan che Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 RE: More then 4GB of RAM on Win2k3 SP1 on Dell Poweredge 2800 Dear Scott Townsend, Thanks for your posting here and also thanks Thee Chicago Wolf' kind reply. Guest Woolf Computing Solutions, Inc. Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 RE: More then 4GB of RAM on Win2k3 SP1 on Dell Poweredge 2800 Morgan, I have a server with 8GB of RAM and I am running Windows 2003 Standard R2 x64. I want to size the right OS revision, which is where I am at right now. Everything I have checked on the MS web site says 4GB is the maximum for this OS. Here is an example URL: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb405950.aspx. Based on what I see, rather than read here is the short summary of my findings: 32-bit Windows Standard Edition --> 4GB Maximum 32-bit Windows Enterprise --> 64GB Maximum any 64-bit Edition of Windows --> Greater than 4GB is supported. Thanks for your help in clearing this up.
