External Time

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've configured one of my W2k3 domain controllers to use an external time,

according to this artice: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042

In step 4 I set the values for NTPServer to Time.Windows.com,0x1.

I stopped & restarted the time service according to the article & then

attempted to resync the time with the following command: w32tm /resync

/rediscover. This gave the following response: 'The computer did not resync

because no time data was available'.

Questions:

Can I specify more than one external time source, and if Yes, how?

Did I use an incorrect command to resync the time? What is the correct

command?

How can I be sure I've the correct time configured on my domain? It would

really be nice for all of the servers to use the exact same time, so that log

entries on different servers could be 'cross-reviewed' with acccurate time

stamps.

Thanks

BigSam,

Try the same procedure you just used, but use a time source such as one of

the ones listed here http://tf.nist.gov/service/time-servers.html

I've found time.windows.com to not be reliable.

Re: External Time

I tried a number of the servers, but none worked. I also tried using some of

the IP addresses without success.

I tried to capture network traffic with Netmon to the servers when I entered

the /resync command, but did not see any UDP port 37 activity. I don't

understand that either.

Re: External Time

My bad - I had TCP port 137 on my mind for another issue I was researching. I

meant UDP Port 123.

Anyway.

I retested and re-captured, and still don't see any network traffic to the

time server nor on UDP port 123.

Re: External Time

For Domain Controllers holding the PDC fsmo role (it is on that you should configure an autoritative time server), I always with

success use this command:

- w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:TIMESOURCE /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update

where TIMESOURCE is the dns name or IP address on the external time server.

If you wish to configure more than one timeserver, you have simply write them with a space between, but then you also have to

surround the configuration part with quotes, like this:

- w32tm /config "/manualpeerlist:TIMESOURCE1 TIMESOURCE2" /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update

Other Doamin Controllers in the doamin synchronize there time with the PDC fsmo role holder, and all other servers/clients in the

domain synchronizes with any Doamin Controller.

If I have trouble with one machine, not synchronizing following this scheme, I use these commands:

- w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update

- net stop w32time

- net start w32time

Hope this helps, brgds

Re: External Time

It doesn't appear that the PDC is getting the time set correctly. The time on

my PDC is different that that on another server that is using the same time

server. I entered the w32tm command as you suggested on the PDC with

time-b.nist.gov as the TIMSESOURCE; the command completed successfully. Then

I ran w32tm /resync /rediscover but received this error: The computer did not

resync because no time data was available

Re: External Time

Try another time server (perhaps *.ntp.org - check http://www.ntp.org/ for the closest pool near to you).

Check if UDP port 123 is blocked in firewall.

Try reinstall time service on the server.
