Guest contactdellthornhill@gmail.com Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Everyone I have a native windows 2000/XP/2003 network with about 40 clients and two Active Directory domain controllers running 2003 server with SP2. Domain controller 1 (DC1) is hosting DHCP, WINS and DNS and Domain controller 2 (DC2) is hosting a backup DNS server. Recently, a few of my users (3 to be exact) reported that they couldn't access their home drives (home drive = network share to \ \dc1\home$\%username% that's mapped by the user's user account in Active Directory). Upon further investigation, it appears that when the computer is rebooted it loses its IP and doesn't regain it until it gets into windows. However, since it doesn't have an IP during the boot process, the computer cannot contact a domain controller and the user logs on with cached credentials which is why the home drive doesn't get mapped. Once the user is in windows, the computer gets an IP from the DHCP server and it's like nothing ever happened. I've tried replacing patch cables, reinstalling NIC drivers, changing ports on the switch, deleting the DHCP lease for the computer on DC1 and capturing the DHCP exchange process and client bootup packet exchange with Wireshark (everything looks fine). Nothing works. The only thing that "fixes" the problem is if I give the user a static IP. However, I'm not about to statically assign everyone an IP. Currently only three people have this problem, but the issue seems to be growing and affecting more people. One last thing, we have a Netgear GSM7248 managed switch as our main office switch. I figure it has to be a problem with either the server or the switch. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Two possible solutions: 1) Uncheck the 'Terminate lease on shutdown' option in DHCP 2) Map the drives in the user logon script in sysvol -- Regards, Newell White "contactdellthornhill@gmail.com" wrote: > Hi Everyone > > I have a native windows 2000/XP/2003 network with about 40 clients and > two Active Directory domain controllers running 2003 server with SP2. > Domain controller 1 (DC1) is hosting DHCP, WINS and DNS and Domain > controller 2 (DC2) is hosting a backup DNS server. > > Recently, a few of my users (3 to be exact) reported that they > couldn't access their home drives (home drive = network share to \ > \dc1\home$\%username% that's mapped by the user's user account in > Active Directory).
