Guest Glenn Clark Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Hi all I need to install a new server. This server will be used by around 50 people (30 on site and 20 remotely) The 30 people on site will be connecting to sql via 3rd party application installed on their own pc's and will not be using the server to login. The 20 remote users need to connect to the 3rd party application via RDP(to be run on the server) and the application will connect to sql which will also be installed on the box. Can anyone suggest what sort of spec machine would be good to run 2003 especially with around 20 rdp users Cheers

That's for admin use only. Sounds like you'll need terminal services CALs. This means you'll actually need two servers - one for SQL/data/whatnot, and one for Terminal Services. You do *not* want to run TS on a box that has any other role on your network - it should be treated as a big fat shared workstation - no data should be stored on it.. It's hard to help you with the hardware specs without knowing a bit more info about your app - doesn't the developer have a list of minimum requirements? That's a good place to start. My general advice (admittedly, I'm not a hardware wonk) ...fast SCSI or SAS drives, in a hardware RAID, and for 20 simultaneous users on a TS box you might want to go for W2003 enterprise so you can use more than 3(odd)GB RAM. Try posting in m.p.windows.terminal_services for help spec'ing out that box.
