Hi all,

When I click on the MS Paint icon from the start menu, instead of opening Paint as I want, it opens a folder called System32, it's as if Paint has disappeared and been replaced with this.

I done a search of my hard drive for any files/folders for 'Paint and tried to open it from different locations and they all do the same, apart from one which brings up the toolbox part of paint and nothing else before crashing.

I've read that I can do a clean install of Paint using my XP CD but I'm a bit worried that doing that will delete the System32 folder which contains drivers and other things that I may need to run the PC.

I think I know how it happened; I left my nieces playing on paint when they were here and I can only assume they must have done something by accident.

It's more of an annoyance than a problem as I only really use Paint to save a screen grab now and again and the rest of XP is running fine.

I use XP with Service Pack 3 installed.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Device Manager

On the left side click on Add/Remove Windows Components

Double click on Accessories and Utilities

Double click on Accessories

Put a check mark at Paint

It will ask you for the Windows disk.

Hi, thanks for that, sorry for the delay in replying. I now have paint working fine if I open it via a shortcut on my desktop but when I try to open it via START-ALL PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-PAINT it opens up the SYSTEM32 folder. How do I sort that out?

Anything in the Start All programs is a shortcut.

Create another shortcut on your desktop. Drag it to the Start button>All Programs Accessories. Replace the one you have there now.
