Update fails to install on XP Pro

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and automatic updates is continually failing

to install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)

..

Even when I try to mannually install it directly from the update site I get

an error: Installation Failure rror Code: 0x643

 

I can find nothing on this problem on Google.

 

Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Install manually from the *download* site rather than the update site.

"Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x86)"

When I intall manually I get the following messages in the error log:

 

[12/15/07,07:38:11] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a: [2] Error: Installation

failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a. MSI returned error code

1603

[12/15/07,10:14:22] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a: [2] Error: Installation

failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a. MSI returned error code

1603

[12/15/07,10:15:05] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework

2.0a is not installed.

 

My Add/Remove programs shows the following

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903)

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

 

I am going to try to uninstall 3 and 2 and then reinstall to see if that

works.

See if the following MSKB article applies:

error message when you try to install a Windows Installer package"

That's okay. Besides, .NET Framework 3.5 has been released for WinXP as

well - it includes SP1 for .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0.

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0,

you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error

code "1603":

I am having the same problem. The update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

Service Pack 1 (KB110806) will not install. Anyone know if this is an

important item for security or for normal use of the operating sytem.

researching this subject. It started when one of our office computers would
