My Windows XP laptop will not boot.

I get "safe mode"..."last know configuration" and about 4 other modes to try..none of which work...plus my CD/DVD isn't working so I can't boot a disk !

Can anyone help please ?

By the way - my profile says Vista, that is for my other machine.

Thanks

Russ

Just to clarify...I have a TOSHIBA Sat Pro M70 laptop, which is running on Windows XP Professional. It has been working fine up to now ! When I now turn on the "Windows XP" logo appears, it then runs through to the TOSHIBA page and then to a screen with prompts, including

Safe Mode

Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Know Good Configuration

Start Windows Normally

None of these work and it returns to this page always. When I run Safe Mode it runs through the /system32/drivers and then stops at /system32/Mup.sys and then returns to original menu above.

My CD/DVD wasn't working anyway, so I've tried running the XP CD through an external CD drive but nothing is happening.

Hi, to be able to use the external CD drive to try and run the XP CD, you may have to alter the boot settings in the BIOS. Plug the drive in with the CD in it, then to get into the BIOS try this-

BIOS Access Procedure 1

Boot the system up and hold down the‘Esc’ key, then press F1 when you get the check system message. You are then in the BIOS Setup and you can make your changes and save and exit by pressing the ‘End’ key.

Once in the BIOS alter the boot order to the external drive as first

If that doesn't get you into BIOS have a look here and try the other methods.

Toshiba - FAQ

If that doesn't work, I am afraid you will have to replace the on board drive to get any further.
