hi i have a emachine 580 i have used my restore cd b4 but when i went to do a restore today the cd would not boot any suggestion of why would be great. usually i just put the disc in and it does it perfectly btw x

Ok it seems by what you are saying that you have made system restores before, by this I mean taking the machine back to factory condition so therefore the primary boot would have to be the cdrom.

 

Once restored did you change it to the hard drive which would be the normal thing to do?

 

Now you wish to restore again did you change the boot to cdrom and save?

Before we go any further do we talk of a Restore cd (back to factory) or a back up recovery cd.

 

A back up of your system is quite different to a full operating system restore cd.

 

Sorry if I'm being a bit confusing but we need as much info as possible.

When the pc boots up and you see the main screen you should see a message that says something like "Press Del to Enter Setup", it may be F2 or another key.

 

This will take you into the bios.

Look for Boot Menu, it may come under Advanced.

 

Change the boot order to CDROM first, pop the disk in, save the changes by usually pressing F10 and exit.

 

The recovery cd should then take over.

thank you ill try that but last time i used my cd i never had to do that will it be safe to do meaning i wont kill my pc will i , sorry if i sound thick just not that up on pcs.

Making the CD drive the first boot device will do no harm at all.

 

However the fact it worked before means one of three things.

 

1. Someone changed the boot order and you don't know it.

 

2. The disk is damaged and can't be read.

 

3. The CD drive has failed and can't read the disk.

is there a difference btween reading music discs and my cd restore disc .

A music cd is probably set to auto play on your computer. This means once you insert it in the drive it automatically starts playing music.

 

A CD that is bootable needs to be inserted in the drive bay and then the computer has to be restarted in order for it to boot (start from the cd) at bootup.

 

This means of course that the computer has to be set to boot from the CD drive first. Not the hard drive or the computer will simply boot to Windows.
