Guest Paul Hesse Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I have a old NT4 DC and intend to migrate its directory services "Users+passwords" to a new WIN2003 R2 Server. If I configure the new 2003 server as a domain controller and run admt to migrate users+passwords to the new DC from the old NT4 dc will admt demote the NT4 DC to a bdc or will it simply copy the user accounts to the new 2003 DC. My thinking is that it will just copy the UID's and PWD to the new controller so in essence users could log into the new domain or continue to log into the old NT4 domain without issue. Any insight most welcome as I was unable to find any specifics in the docs. Thanks. Paul.

No. Actually there is no way to "demote" an NT 4.0 PDC, you promote a BDC to PDC and *that* action demotes the PDC. ADMT does none of this. hth DDS "Paul Hesse" <Paul Hesse@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:B4187857-32DC-4BCC-BDED-C1D5431F622E@microsoft.com... >I have a old NT4 DC and intend to migrate its directory services > "Users+passwords" > to a new WIN2003 R2 Server. > > If I configure the new 2003 server as a domain controller and run admt to > migrate > users+passwords to the new DC from the old NT4 dc will admt demote the NT4 > DC > to a bdc or will it simply copy the user accounts to the new 2003 DC. > > My thinking is that it will just copy the UID's and PWD to the new > controller so in essence users could log into the new domain or continue > to > log into the old NT4 > domain without issue. > > Any insight most welcome as I was unable to find any specifics in the > docs. > > Thanks. Guest Paul Hesse Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Re: ADMT V2 Migrating a WIN NT4 Domain Hi Danny thanks for the reply. I just want to clarify if I migrate the NT4 accounts and passwords to a new 2003 DC with a different domain name will the NT4 DC still function as it did prior to migrating the actual accounts. What I want to achieve is bring up a new domain on the 2003 box with the same user accounts and PWD's that are on the old NT4 hardware. When I go live with the 2003 box I turn off the nt4 and use the domain rename tool to rename the 2003 Domain to what the NT4 domain was. Doing this I believe the migration to the new hardware would be seamless from a end user perspective. Items like profiles on the nt4 box are a non issue as its just used for Auth to access network shares etc. Loading NT4 on new hardware is not a option for me. Thanks Paul.

Yes. The tool ADMT is also used to "split" a domain and leave the old domain intact and import user accounts into a new domain. hth DDS "Paul Hesse" <PaulHesse@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:89548E7D-B8BC-4905-BD05-D5D322CE7904@microsoft.com... > Hi Danny thanks for the reply. > > I just want to clarify if I migrate the NT4 accounts and passwords to a > new > 2003 > DC with a different domain name will the NT4 DC still function as it did > prior to > migrating the actual accounts. > > What I want to achieve is bring up a new domain on the 2003 box with the > same user accounts and PWD's that are on the old NT4 hardware.
