Have Dell latitude CSx that was running win98. On boot I get the message

"Cannot find Win.com, unable to continue loading Windows"

I've read the microsoft article (136630) on "Creating a New Win.com File

When You Cannot Start Windows" but cannot find the win.cnf file in wther

win98_25.cab or win98_28.cab. Can some one tell me where to find it.??

I've held back from re-installing 98 as not sure whether this would give an

option to repair. I don't want to wipe out whats on the Drive. Can I repair

???

Give the group a bit more to work with like:

Did this occur after a long storage of a computer?

Did this occur after installing some file or application?

Have you messed around in the BIOS or changed the hard drive around?

Did this occur after some Internet contact?

What shows when you do a [type dir c: and hit enter] DIR C: from a boot

floppy, or from a c: prompt - type dir then hit enter?

Also, from a boot floppy what shows after typing fdisk /status?

MEB,

Thanks for quick response.

1. Did this occur after a long storage of a computer? - No

2. Did this occur after installing some file or application? - Yes

This occured after an attempt to upgrade to win2000. During install, files

(win98) were deleted before the win2000 install failed with a memory issue.

Can't remember details (I know I should have taken a note) but there didn't

appear to be enough memory to do what it wanted ?? (128MB RAM, 20GB HDD -

17GB Free)

Subsequently on reboot Dblbuff.sys and Ifshlp.sys were also "not found" but

these have been retored. On boot now get screen display of.......

C:\> REM [Header]

Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading windows

3. Have you messed around in the BIOS or changed the hard drive around? - No

4. Did this occur after some Internet contact? - No

5. What shows when you do a [type dir c: and hit enter] DIR C: from a boot

floppy, or from a c: prompt - type dir then hit enter?

Performing dir from boot floppy or c: prompt displays directory listing -

13 files and five directories including c:\windows. This directory itself

shows 109 files and 31 directories .

6. Also, from a boot floppy what shows after typing fdisk /status?

Fixed disc Drive Status as displayed......

Just install Win98 again, right on top of itself. In other words,

install it into the same folder that it's in now. I've done this many

times. You wont lose anything unless you have other problems such as

bad hardware, and even then I dont think you'll lose any data because

if Windows finds hardware problems, it wont install. About the only

thing I ever had when installing on top of my present setup. was my

desktop moved some of the icons. That's a minor annoyance at most.

OR, find a friend with Win98, or install it on some old clunker

computer. Put win.com onto a floppy and copy it to your windows

folder. If you go to one of the binary newsgroups for windows,

someone will probably upload win.com for you. It's only 25K.

I'd upload it right now, but I dont have access to binaries with my

usenet connection.

<snip>

Put your Windows 98 CD into the computer you are using now, find the "win98"

folder in My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click it, select "Find", type

"*.cab" into the "Named" box and "win.cnf" into the "Containing text" box.

Then click "Find now".

Ben,

Thanks for input. I'd searched as recommended but didn't locate files.

Re: win.com missing

Thanks for input. Good suggestion!. I located a copy of 98 on 10GB hard

spare. Installed on another system and located win.com. However when this

installled another file required and when this installed another etc. I

finally got all notified missing/corrupt files input but then window hung at

win98 screen. Rather than pursue further and, as the aim was to get 2000

installed, I removed HDD put in 2.5in caddy and recovered required data

before wiping clean and installing win 2000. Currently installing updates

Thanks to all
