Bracador Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Hi there, I have Windows XP Home Edition and recently had to format my computer after a virus strike. Everything seems to be running fine until i use Explorer, i start searching for something but after about 10 minutes of extreeeeeeeemly slow opening pages i get the pop up saying "there is a problem with explorer and must shut down" . I've run Super Anti Spyware program and no viruses detected and i've emptied my cookie folder. Maybe someone has another option i can try, i would be very greatful. Thanks for your time. Sue :) Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Hi, there can be many reasons for slow running in any web browser including malware infestations. However to try to isolate whether it is only Internet Explorer giving you the problem, try downloading and installing Firefox and see how that runs. Firefox can be downloaded from here- Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Bracador Posted May 9, 2009 Author Posted May 9, 2009 This probably seems like a real blond question but does that mean i have to stop using Google? because i like the simplicity of just a search box. A friend suggested upgrading my windows XP with a service pack but i'm not sure if i'm just downloading a lot of stuff for nothing, or where to get it. ( free if possible, small buget ) Any advice? Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Firefox has Google built in as a search engine but first you may wish to try to reset IE. Have a read of this. How to reset Internet Explorer settings The latest service pack for XP is SP3 so obtain that too if you do not have it. Quote
Bracador Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 Now another problem  Hi again, I tried reseting Explorer settings and i haven't seen the message popup again so fingers crossed that part is fixed but i have run into a problem when upgrading and installing Service Packs. I seem to have service pack 1 already in the form of Hotfixes but i tried to download pack 2 and another popup said i couldn't do it. I'm sure it said something like "only one service pack per...???...." sorry i didn't write the rest down. I have made sure the automatic updates are switched on and i'm hoping that will help things get better. Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Go to windows up dates and try again. Windows XP Software Updates Write down any error messages this time. Quote
Bracador Posted May 17, 2009 Author Posted May 17, 2009 Me Again Hi again, Ok, i have reset Explorers settings and i'm still getting the popup that says it has a problem and then shuts it down. I tried to download service pack 2 and it took ages to even get a small amount of blue in the download bar so i had to cancel it. I did this several times to see if it would improve but no such luck. I have just visited the Microsoft site to download the newest Explorer ( the 3-in-1 package ) and i get the popup " Can't find entrypoint SHRegGetValueW in DLL file SHLWAPI.dll " What can i do now, any ideas ? Thanks for your valuable time, Sue Quote
Tootech Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I'm pretty sure IE7 needs Service Pack 2 or later. Go here, download SP2 to your computer - if you have to leave it on overnight to download, so be it - you really need it. Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 2 for IT Professionals and Developers Install it - it will take a good half hour, reboot and see how things are. Quote
Bracador Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 Thanks for the help, I've just started the download from your link and i have everything crossed. I'll let you know what happens :) Thanks again Quote
Bracador Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 Hi, First i would like to say Yippeeeeeeee! i have downloaded and installed SP2 and it seems to be doing ok but somethings have stopped working. My printer was no longer active ( but i've resolved that problem using the sevices file ) and i'm having problems playing a game that i was playing yesterday. I click on the game icon and it starts as normal, but i try to load my saved game and it asks me to insert game disk which is already in the drive and clicking ' ok ' does nothing. Is there anything i can do? I must sound like a complete bimbo  Quote
Tootech Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 So far so good. The bad news is that you need yet more updates on your computer. You may need to uninstall your printer and your game, install the updates and the reinstall printer/game. Windows XP is currently at Service Pack 3. Hop over to Windows Update and work through the process. It will take a while...again, but its worth it. One thing - you can install Internet Explorer 7, thats works great, but I'd recommend you hold off with Internet Explorer 8 for the moment. Quote
maynardvdm Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 You can also copy your saved games file to a safe place so you wont loose your saved games. ;) Quote We are all members helping other members. Bracador Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 Just a quick question, if i start downloading IE7 (now i finaly have SP2) will i lose any files or settings? I've saved a copy of my saved games on the desktop. Quote
Tootech Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 You won't lose any files or settings. Although not essential, it would be best if you install Service Pack 3 before Internet Explorer 7 - I think SP3 does actually install it. Go here and look for the link What Is Service Pack 3? Download Windows XP Service Pack 3 From Windows Update Click it, follow the instructions and that should get you updated. Quote
