A company with whom I want to work with is having problems with the two way communication of his software ( aswell as loading his software onto my laptop). I currently use the laptop and we also have a desktop connected through a wireless bebox. Our ISP is Be unlimited.

The company tried to connect my laptop to a zylex router(non-wireless) as they said that their software plus two-way communication would work with it. However they coudn't even succesfully install the zylex router. Since then when I reconnected to bebox I can't access internet. My ISP have spent around 10 hours( have been brill!) reconfigurating everything again, but no joy! They say my laptop is detecting and is showing bebox connectivity, but I can't open any webpage.

The company aren't helping and only say that once I get up and running on laptop again they will install wireless zyxel router and thus I won't again have these problems. Does it make sense that I need a zyxel router? Please help! Thanks

Hi

Your laptop should be able to connect to the network wired or wireless. Are you using a static IP to connect to the Lan? If the router is setup with an address range of (example) 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.3 and their are already 3 computers on the Lan you will not be able to connect with your dynamic IP address. Expand the address range and give your laptop a static IP if the router is configured for static IP addresses.

change of router

Apologies for not replying much earlier. My brain seemed to be worn out with all this and resetting/reconfigurating with my ISP.

Thank you so much for the information. I will keep this information for when I get my laptop going again and try to connect to the wireless zyxel router. Does anyone know why the company says that I need this type of router, and that they re-assure me that their software and two-way communication will happen , once router connected.

Meanwhile , my ISP keep re-assuring me that the laptop is fully connected to the Bebox but now say that the problem is that my network cards, both for the ethernet and wireless connection aren't operating correctly.

p.s I hope that when and if i ever become hi-tech that I can help others on this forum!

Hi

My answer was based on a working network card but that should be easy enough to check, if you can connect to the internet you shouldn't have any problems connecting to the intranet. Is you laptop an older model, most newer model are sold with wireless cards.

change of router

Thanks again for information.

I'm going to have a break from trying to get my laptop going again (am using desktop at moment- this has continued to work despite also being connected to bebox too!)

I think , what I'm going to do, is ask my 14 yr old son (very hi-tech!) to use a fresh head and to decipher technical info' and to fiddle around. This is a long shot as I'm sure he will want to prioritise his friends or his PS3. I might have to bribe him!!!

Would still greatly appreciate info' as to why zyxel routers are so special. thanks

It may not be Zyxel specifically, but the features that specific router has for example VPN traffic.

You didn't say what the two-way communication software is called - it may be that the company has tested their software and configuration, and settled on Zyxel for their standard router.

That said, Zyxel are good routers. I've been using them for the last 3 years or so and never had any problems.

the company is OPAL (supply telephone lines and broadband to businesses) -the software is Opal dialler and the two-way communication is x-lite.

I wonder if this helps you with your answer.Tthanks again!

change of router

Hi there,

It looks like I've finally manged to get re-connected to the net on my laptop. It seems the windows firewall aswell as the commodo firewall weren't correctly set.

If I remember, whilst trying to install zylex router we did tamper with the firewall as the notice kept coming up that a new LAN has been detected!

Hi

Glad to see you're connected! You might want to disable one of those firewalls, its okay to have one hardware firewall and one software firewall but not two software firewalls as you currently have now, just something to consider. Take care.

Hi and further to Starams advice, don't turn off the Comodo firewall, it is much better to leave that one on as it is a two way firewall, disable or turn off the Windows firewall instead as that is only one way.

Another thing to consider is that if Comodo is disabled, and you then decide to uninstall it, it is a nightmare to remove, much better leaving it on.
