TS slowing down after changing protections in registry

A Windows Server 2003 TS must run legacy applications.

To let legacy applications work I was requested to change the protection of

some registry keys (mainly in HKCR) to give full control to some users.

After applying the changes the TS server is getting really slow, so that to

launch an application I need 15 minutes.

The system is slow either while working from the console (as local

Administrator) or from a RDP session.

Using Process Explorer (by Sysinternals) it looks that explorer.exe is the

critical component, either launched from the console or laounched by

applications browsing the file system to open files.

How can I perform further troubleshooting?

I know that changing protections in registry is a "normal" action to let

legacy applications run: is there any guideline to avoid possible problems?

Re: TS slowing down after changing protections in registry

You mentioned this also happens when user logon to physical console, which

implies that it may not be Terminal Services specific issue.

Unless you know exactly what you're doing, changing registry key directly in

anyway always has risks. Can you please share where do you get the

information that changing registry key permissions directly is normal way to

address app compatibility issue?

I would suggest you run by this with the persons who requested you to change

the registry permissions.

If possible, try to undo the changes. It would be better to get another

machine (or a guest OS in virtual PC/server environment) as a test server,

this way you don't have to put more risks on your production server. Try to

do the same regkey change, undo the registry changes, see if issues still

repro.

Thanks
