DVD-ripping software for Vista?

I just bought a mini-DVD camcorder (my son's first nativity play on Friday, so I thought I'd become camcorder-dad).

 

I want to be able to rip my recorded DVDs onto my PC and edit/merge the resulting files.

 

I'm pretty sure I can rip them through Media Center, but I don't believe I have editing abilities in Media*Center to splice things about. I have Vista Ultimate, in case there's something already there that I missed.

 

Anyone got any recommendations?

 

Must be Vista compatible and preferably cheap\free.
