I'm running Windows XP Home. I rarely use the fax, which I want to use now. The PC says no modem is connected, I think because I'm not using the one built in, but an external modem from Tiscali. I have a Lexmark X75 all in one which also acts as a fax. I've gone to printers and faxes in control panel and tried setting Lexmark as default printer, but the monitor just tells me that no modem is connected. Any suggestions?:(

Hi

Right-Click My Computer and select Properties

Click on the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager

Does it show any modem there?

What modem is the external one from Tiscali?

still no good

Thanks for the document Wolfey Mole, but in add/remove and add windows components, the fax service box is ticked. In control panel, printers and faxes, I have several printers showing. Some are copies of the Lexmark X74 (if I said X75, it's X74) I'm using a pc I bought from a friend with my own hard drive. he thought the driver for the printer might be on the old motherboard, but I seem to have that in a file on the hard drive and the printer is working. I'm told by the pc that no modem is connected, but I'm online so I think it's lying.

I think you may be confusing a a modem with an ethernet socket because you are online Fozzy, I assume your using broadband yes?

It's all getting a bit confusing for me - here's the bottom line.

Fax technology uses phone lines to transmit data - you need a dial up modem to work with Microsoft Fax - a broadband modem will not work.

Sending a fax using your printer also requires your computer to have a dial up modem - quoted from the printer manual

Do you need to send a fax? Your All-In-One can handle that, too. The

following steps lead you through sending a fax using your computer’s

modem.

If you want to use the Microsoft Fax software, fit a 56k dial up modem. If you prefer not to do that, have a look here for a broadband alternative.

Thank you both for your replies. I didn't realise I needed a dial up modem to fax. It looks like this pc I'm using doesn't have one. Is it likely I can swap the one from my old pc? That's a AMD Athlon 2200 and I'm now using a AMD Athlon 3200.
