WU v4 for WinMe

Recommended Posts

Posted

For those who need to know - and are still interested - the Windows Updates

for WinMe are still currently available at the MS WinMe WU site, in spite of

being out of Support by some 18 months.

Just did a Clean Install (failed HDD) and all 10+ Critical Updates/Service

Packs and 45+ WinMe updates (inc. some 34 language fixes) are there. Using

broadband, it wasn't very much slower than using the MS Security CD (2004)

and all (seemingly) installed in their correct sequence.

Let's hope that MS keep them available for a few more years yet. It would be

a shame to pull them for the sake of a few hundred MB or so of web space.

Have noticed also that the KB articles for WinMe have recently been pruned

somewhat, but at least support is still there. Thanks MS - please don't

abandon us altogether.

I've been keeping my eye on the WU site for a while now, in fact ever

since the "can't help, you're using a Mac" episode earlier this year.

I've got an "out of the box" clean install of Win Me (on a virtual

machine) that has never been updated and have got into the habit of firing

it up and checking WU with it every couple of weeks or so.

> Just did a Clean Install (failed HDD)

Oh dear! I thought it was only me that had that sort of misfortune. I

hope you didn't lose anything too important.

This is something that is particularly annoying me. Fortunately I've got

a 2005 copy of the KB installed from TechNet on this box so can see the

old articles even if they have been withdrawn. What I don't understand is

why some very very old KB articles still remain whilst some needed by

those running Win Me have gone.

That's worth knowing as I still have the WinME box here that Kelly used and

I now keep for storage and for John to use if he has problems with his XP

box.

It's never had to be re-installed though and has all the critical updates

that were made available for WinME before support was stopped.

Mart:

Don't know whether you remember it or not, quite a few months ago Gary S.

Terhune (hope to get the name right) made two CD's available for the

participants in this news group, for all the '98 and 'ME Updates and the

Windows Security Updates.

Correct me if I am wrong, but those were supposed to include 'all the

necessary Updates' to my understanding. I secured the two CD's for myself at

the time, in order to be prepared for enventualities.

Re: WU v4 for WinMe

Yes Harry, I was aware. But I was just alerting folks to the fact that they

are still (currently) available on the MS WU site, especially with the

recent pruning/modifications/rationalisation of the KB and the fact that

WinMe is now some 18 months out of Support time. And, a plaintive plea for

continued consideration by MS - assuming they still read the WinMe NG's!

Therefore for those who were thinking of doing a 'Clean Install' of WinMe, -

for whatever reason - now *might be* a good time, especially for those other

folk who weren't aware or hadn't got a copy of Gary's CD's. Unless MS

continue their unofficial support of course!

Indeed Joan, had it not been for the failing HDD, I probably wouldn't have

been too bothered and just 'settled' for WU advising that my previously

working installation was 'up to date'.

I guess it's called 'Peace of Mind'!

Hello Harry!

How does one obtain the 2 CD's of Win 98 and ME updates from Gary?

Do I just email him at: http://www.grystmill.com/ ?

Also, I thought I read that Shane Beatson also had a CD set. But his home

page of http://website.lineone.net/~shanebeatson/index.htm seems dead now.

Thanks,

O.J.

Just discovered it was way back in March, when I got mine.

Try and contact him at this address:

webmaster@grystmill.com

If no joy, use your's. If neither works, contact me at my email address and

I will give you his home address. The cost 'was' $3.

His collection is more complete than Shane's and he's disappeared from the

scene,

by the looks of it. <H>.

You can download all the files - and subsequently make your own CD - as

follows :-

Instructions, courtesy of Mike M

--

From the Windows Update site. If you don't want to install them immediately

but want to download and install them later, perhaps on another PC, then use

the link to the Windows Update Catalogue on the site. This link doesn't

show

by default and you have to add the link by selecting in the left hand pane

"Personalize Windows Update". Now in the right hand pane check the box

"Display the link to the Windows Update Catalogue" and then click "Save

Settings". Now select "Windows Update Catalogue" in the left hand pane, and

then when the right hand pane opens, use "Find updates for Microsoft Windows

operating systems", then select Windows Millennium Edition and the correct

language then click Search. You can now select which patches, etc. you wish

to download and they can then be downloaded and saved to your hard disk.

--

Having saved the downloaded files to your HDD, then you are in the position

to be able make your own CD (even if you have to move them to yet another pc

with a CD burner)

Re: WU v4 for WinMe

Thanks to everyone. Actually I knew about the update catalog option. Problem

is..the updates wouldn't show up on my xp machine. That new v7 really screwed

up my access so that's why I was looking for some set disks as a hassle

workaround. Guess I'll whip up my ME vhd and see what we get via that route.

You're not alone. The new v7 Windows Update Catalogue doesn't contain

entries for Windows Millennium or any other Win 9x system..

If you've got VirtualPC set up then give it a whirl however still use the

Catalogue option so that you can easily save the files.

Hello:

I just contacted Gary at the address that Harry gave below, and Gary is

still responding and is still supplying the CD's for $3.

FYI.

Cheers,

O.J.
