Guest ChrisB Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Hi, I have MOM monitoring our servers (100+ servers). Their is a policy in use which disables the telephony service (as per a best practice document we used when setting up the AD, regarding disabling unused services). MOM highlights errors on several of the servers that the Remote Access Connection Manager Service is unavailable due to the dependency on the Telephony service which failed to start. Can anyone help shine any light on why this would be occuring? Their does not appear to be a set pattern to which servers it occurs on - AV box, some SMS (not all), some Citrix servers. All servers are running 2003 with either SP1 or SP2 (mostly SP2).

If the machine is not initiating a VPN or any other type of RAS connection, and especially if RAS is not enabled, I would say it is safe to disable that service as well. As for best practices and services that can be disabled, keep in mind the DHCP CLient service must not be disabled. If you ask me the name of the service is misnamed. It performs DNS resolution as well as DNS registration, which is very important on DCs. You can also disable MOM from checking on that. Look in the error and it will tell you what script it used and what section it is in. Go to MOM Admin and disable checking for that service. -- Regards, Ace This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights. Guest ChrisB Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Re: Remote Access Connection Manager Ace, I can confirm that the DHCP Client service is NOT disabled. With regard to disabling the alert - the rule is simply for notifying that a service or driver failed to start. This is not a specific rule for monitoring the Remote access connection service. Do you know a way how to filter this to apply to a specific service? Thanks for your time. When you saw the error in MOM, in the bottom, where it tells you which script of location that enabled the monitoring, can you find that in the Admin console?
