Hello Ace

Welcome to FPCH

Ok a couple of questions.

What happens if you try to just play normal cd's?

Have you tried burning files to cd's, say Word docs etc?

Ok you sound to be using WMP 11 to just burn music, have you any other burning software installed like Nero for example?

It sounds to me like the burning aspect of the drive is knackered to be honest mate.

Ok slow down ok, calm down.

What we need to ascertain is if you can burn other files.

At the risk of wasting a 700 MB cd try burning something other than music to a disk by using either Nero, if you still have it, or Roxio which should be built into XP.

My bet is that it won't.

Get back to us ok.

Ok uninstall WMP 11 and the run a Search for any Files and Folders by typing windows media player 11 and delete them.

I'd go back to WMP 10.

Read this carefully here.

It's the 3rd download.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx

I did try burning with the WMP10 same thing happened did not burn, should i still roll back to it? and delete wmp11 files?

  1. Disconnect any portable music or video devices that might be attached to your computer.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
  4. Click Windows Media Player 11, and then click Remove.
  5. In each of the two confirmation dialog boxes that appear, click OK.
  6. When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes), click Restart.

Yeh doing that now but at the end it does say Install the final released version of Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP and play protected content in Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. I guess i will need to do that also.

Hi, probably a daft question;) but have you tried a different make of CD/R disks? sometimes there can be odd issues with some makes and seems to be more so with laptops. Try a different make, and also have you tried with rewritable disks? I know they are more expensive, but worth a try.

Other wise it seems strange that it did manage two tracks and then failed. That makes me suspicious there may be some intermittent fault with the drive itself.

That can only be proved with a replacement one of course I am afraid.

However it may only be a poor connection, can you get into the laptop and check the leads are connected properly?

Just my two penny worth.

Nev.

Hi Ace, I meant the internal leads inside the laptop. It may only be the connections inside come loose. I did say "Can you get into the laptop?"
