Clients getting same device licenses?

Recommended Posts

We have a terminal server running in the device licensing mode. Initially,

clients received licenses and appeared in licensing manager. It now appears

newly connected clients are not appearing in licensing manager, but if we

check their registry, they are receiving licenses. We don't see any errors

in the event log on the licensing server or the terminal server. We have run

the tsctst.exe tool on the new clients and it seems that they are receiving

the same licenses that were received by previously licensed PCs (the node

name is reported as being the node name of a PC that already received a

license) and they show the proper license server.

We use cloned pcs, but they are joined to the domain after cloning, so I

believe the SID should be different. Has anyone seen this before and are

there any solutions to this problem? Thanks.

Other information:

Terminal server running in per device mode

Licensing server running as enterprise scope with device CALs installed

Both are not domain controllers

All clients are members of the domain

Clients are desktops and laptops, no thin clients

Thanks in advance, Bruce

yes, this might be caused by the same SID of the cloned computer. I

suggested you delete the cals in the registry key and use the tool newsid to

generate a SID for the cloned computer, then try to connect to the terminal

server and see if it could issue a new CAL.

You could download the NewSID tool in the microsoft website

Re: Clients getting same device licenses?

Thanks John,

You're right, we tested newsid and found that the workstations will get new

licenses and register in TS license manager. The question now is how to run

newsid on several hundred computers. I could not find documentation on

newsid as far as how it affects the domain status of the workstation. Can we

run newsid on the computer while still in the domain? Will it update the sid

in Active Directory. I know that removing the PC from the domain, deleting

the AD account, running newsid, and rejoining the domain will work, but this

will be very difficult logistically, as many of the users only work remotely,

and there are alot of them. Any suggestions on how to do this efficiently

are appreciated. Thanks.
