Win2k3 Terminal Services license?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a couple of locations that have Win2k3 servers that are setup as TS.

In TS license viewer, I see "Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal

Services CAL Token (per device)" and type=built-in and total/available shows

unlimited, issued=0.

However I also see "Temporary Licenses for Windows Server 2003 - Terminal

Server Per Device CAL Token" type=temporary, total/available= - and issued=26.

My question is, and this might be dumb on my part, but WHY is it not using

the win2k CALs? And if it isn't going to use them why are they there in the

first place?

My temporaries are about to expire, and I will further investigate that,

because supposedly licenses have been installed already.

The server CALs are different with Terminal license (the terminal cals), if

you just have the server cals, users uses the temporary cals, by default, it

will be expired in 90 days. You need to buy the Terminal CALs separately.

Re: Win2k3 Terminal Services license?

The built-in "Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL

Token (per device)" licenses are issued when XP pro or W2K Pro

clients connect to a *W2K* TS. If these clients connect to a 2003

TS like yours, they cannot be used. And they are there on a 2003 TS

Licensing Server because a 2003 TS LS can also function as a TS LS

for W2K Ter minal Servers, it's backwards compatible.

But you'll need to buy 2003 TS CALs, either Per Device or Per User.
