Im the main user on my pc. Me, my son & my wife have all our own user accounts. When i log onto mine i can not open anything including internet, yet when i log on either of the other user accounts i can. When i log in & try to open the internet or anything i get the following message : Windows cannot access the specific device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I can view all my docs such as music, pictures & word / excell docs but nothing else.

I cant even do a system restore of go into help & support!!!

Can someone please please help????

go to start>control panel>user accounts> click on your account and in there you should see if oyu have an admiin account or a limited account...that would be the first thing i would try.

Yes i am the administrator but i cant do anything on my user account - therefore i cant do anything other than when i log in as someone else. But i cant do a system restore.

well thats a strange one,,what i would do is add another user (this being your new account),then log in to it,make sure it is has admin rights.then go to my computer>c:>documents and settings. then go into your old account and copy everything from there to your new account.your programmes will all be ok.the only thing you may have to reset up is your email...but i can guide you through restoring your old emails and calender etc.

if you do this please make sure you unhide hidden files and folders, and operating system files, in folder options.tools>folder options.

let me know if that helps.

you need to be tapping f8 the minute the pc turns on if you do,and still get to the windows xp logo then the options will to show......how long has this issue been going on...you could always try system restore whne you are logged into one of the other accounts, that you stated worked.

When i log on as another person it tells me that i need administrators reights to be able to open or change user accounts. When i press F8 it comes up with options but none of it is a safe mode option?

can you gain access to task manager or the run command.if so type sfc /scannow,it may prompt you for the cd, do you have xp pro or home edition,,you may want to check to see if a group policy has been setup....items have came into my shop with similar issues to yours.

Can't seem to do that either. I have XP but nothing seems to be working!!

I'm thinking of just resetting the whole pc - if thats possible & just save all my pics to disc or a backup file??

Any other ideas or help how to do back up with limited access?

Thanks

may be worth getting another hard drive then using that as nmaster and your old as slave.then install xp on the new, then just copy your data back over...
