Guest DaffyD® Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I posted a question in the win98disks.general newsgroup about it being an appropriate forum to address floppy disk drive issues. Since the last post for that group was 12/6, I'd like to ask it here since this is a more active ng. I run Win 98SE, but the problem I have is with the installation of the drive itself. I've posted the issue in other ngs but have never gotten an answer which solved the problem. I've also googled for an answer but came up with nada. Is this an issue I could post here? Thanks. -- { : [|]=( DaffyD® If I knew where I was I'd be there now.

Firstly, the "A" floppy is connected at the far end of the cable, after the twist (no, not Chubby Checkers). There are two ways it can be connected, and unlike IDE drives, there is *no* standard as to where pin one is on the FD wrt the power connector. The design makes it impossible to damage either the drive or the FDC (or equivalent). So, assuming one makes a full and firm connection, plugging it in "wrong" will result in that the activity light will be on and the FD motor will run continuously (BIOS better not recognize the drive). If you see that, "flip" the cable and you will be in business - Ass-u-ME-ing that the FDC, the floppy and the cable are good. The BIOS will recognize the floppy; set the proper parmeters (drive type and density), and go thru the BIOS to see that it is enabled. I always set my computers for boot seek in this order: Floppy, CD, IDEzero. That way you can always boot to DOS if all else goes bad. And one can do a heck of a lot of PM diagnostics in DOS.
