Hi, I bought a brand new HP laptop 3 months ago but I noticed yesterday the CD/DVD drive has stopped working. I don't use it too often but wanted to put a couple of photos on a disc yesterday so I could go to Tesco and print them. When I go into explorer the drive does not show up.

Any ideas?

FYI- I have a HP G70 Laptop running Vista Home Premium.

Thanks!

Hi

Try this, first click on the link and see if the Microsoft repair tool can fix it for you, I'm not sure if it will work on Vista.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

In the event it does not work, try this:

1. Go to Start -> Run

2. Type: regedit

3. Press OK

4. The Registry Editor will appear.

5. On the left side of the Editor, Click the (+) sign next to each of the following keys to expand them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

6. Find the following key but don't click the (+) sign next to it, just click on it:

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

(be careful to find the correct one, you'll screw if you don't follow this exactly)

7. On the right panel, look for 2 values named: "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters"

8. Right click on each of them and choose DELETE for both to erase them.

9. Close the Registry Editor

10. Restart computer. Your DVD rom should work by now.

Still Excellent advice

I have an HP that was working fine but when I moved to a more powerful laptop and cleaned this one up the drive quit working. Likely my own doing but . . . . .

Anyway I followed your regedit instructions and it is back to good health. My wife thanks you as she is about to get it as a massive upgrade from her current laptop.

Great advice and spot on.
