Guest bobby Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Windows 2003 Standard Server. This is a new Server bought from Dell and do not know where else to look for support. I am trying to set up users and therefore change user passwords. I cannot and get the message "Windows cannot complete the pwrd. Password does not meet the password policy requirements etc." I have checked the policy in domain controller Securtity Settings and they we all not defined. So I have tried by defining and following the rules. Still cannot change a password. Have looked on Microsoft website and downloaded a hotfix and still no luck. Can anybody help? I would think a new install on a new server would not give me this anount of grief on a week end and with no support.

Check the Default domain Policy GPO. -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "bobby" <bobby@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:02951E00-2BD4-47D8-A222-A4A3A541479C@microsoft.com... > Windows 2003 Standard Server. > > This is a new Server bought from Dell and do not know where else to look > for > support. > I am trying to set up users and therefore change user passwords. > > I cannot and get the message > "Windows cannot complete the pwrd. > Password does not meet the password policy requirements etc." > > I have checked the policy in domain controller Securtity Settings and they > we all not defined. > > So I have tried by defining and following the rules. > Still cannot change a password. > Have looked on Microsoft website and downloaded a hotfix and still no > luck. > > Can anybody help? > > I would think a new install on a new server would not give me this anount > of > grief on a week end and with no support.

Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Re: Password problem Re: Password problem You shouldn't do that anyway. You need to set up password policy that match the security needs of your enterprise, and then respect this policy. You must also waits for replication to get th epolicy applied -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU English blog: http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com French blog: http://www.lotp.fr "bobby" <bobby@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C77A7784-75E3-4A45-B088-4CD2298F153A@microsoft.com... > Hi Thanks, I checked the default Domain Security and removed all the > settings > and still I cannot change the passwords. > > "Mathieu CHATEAU" wrote: > >> Hello, >> >> is it local or domain account ? >> If it's domain account, installing a new server won't help. What's that server for? Is it a domain controller or a member server in the domain? Assuming you're in a domain, you have to look at the Default Domain Policy or any other Group Policy linked to the domain level as password policies are only valid at that level. Having said that, I don't recommend changing the complexity of the current policy or creating a new password policy that would allow "weak" passwords. You lower overall security significantly by doing so - at least for production environments. cheers, Florian -- Microsoft MVP - Windows Server - Group Policy. eMail: prename [at] frickelsoft [dot] net. blog: http://www.frickelsoft.net/blog.
Guest bobby Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Re: Pasword problem Hi Ok I will set the Default Domain Password settings back to default. What idealy should I set them to as I cannot remeber the defaults. Thanks "Florian Frommherz [MVP]" wrote: > Howdie! > > bobby schrieb: > > I cannot and get the message > > "Windows cannot complete the pwrd. > > Password does not meet the password policy requirements etc." > > > > I have checked the policy in domain controller Securtity Settings and they > > we all not defined. > > What's that server for? The defaults are: Enforce password history: 24 passwords remembered Maximum password age: 42 days Minimum password age: 1 days Minimum password length: 7 characters Password must meet complexity requirements: Enabled Store passwords using reversible encryption: Disabled Those defaults are a baseline for you - you can stick with them or change them to whatever fits your desires. Again, it is recommended to a strong policy in order to have your users choose strong passwords. You better are a little too restrictive in your settings than too loose. cheers, Florian -- Microsoft MVP - Windows Server - Group Policy. eMail: prename [at] frickelsoft [dot] net. blog: http://www.frickelsoft.net/blog.
