no desktop icons, start menu, task bar??

I am having a terrible time with my win. xp home edition right now. It

started a couple of days ago, all of a sudden the task bar, icons on the

desktop, and start menu disappeared. I had been working in the task

manager, deleting some processes... I was doing as the Sims 2 Holiday Edition

manual said, as it also said everything would return to normal after i

restarted my computer. well since then, one of 2 things have been happening.

Either everything flashes [appears for like 15 secs then disappears for

couple secs, comes back, disppears, comes back....] or all i have is the

desktop wall paper. I have been trying to fix this for a couple of days and

i don't know what to do. explorer.exe was missing from the list of processes

in the taskmanager so i added it and then everything came back. but then

like 10 secs later it disappeared again. I can use most of my programs

through the task manager. I did a Hijack This, as i have seen a lot of

people with this problem do. Here is the log:

RE: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar??

I am having the same problem. I downloaded some updates from microsoft and

lost the Start button and the icons at the bottom of the desktop. If you find

Have you tried doing a System Restore to bring the PC back to a time before

you began "deleting processes" via the Task Manager as the Sims 2 Holiday

Edition manual said?

Yes, I tried that... Question- if i do a restore, will i lose all of my files

i have created since that date? I need to back up a lot of stuff if I want

to try and go back farther. I can try to do that sometime soon though I

guess. Any other ideas?

If you do a system restore and find that you are missing critical files

afterward SR does have an undo feature, it takes a snapshot before any

changes are made just for this reason.

Open tas manager then click on "file" in the upper lt. corner select "new

task" type in explorer.exe then hit ok, does your desktop reappear?

P.S. I noticed that you are running AOL well it's not called AOHELL for

nothing.
