Guest raparten Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 I am having a terrible time with my win. xp home edition right now. It started a couple of days ago, all of a sudden the task bar, icons on the desktop, and start menu disappeared. I had been working in the task manager, deleting some processes... I was doing as the Sims 2 Holiday Edition manual said, as it also said everything would return to normal after i restarted my computer. well since then, one of 2 things have been happening. Either everything flashes [appears for like 15 secs then disappears for couple secs, comes back, disppears, comes back....] or all i have is the desktop wall paper. I have been trying to fix this for a couple of days and i don't know what to do. explorer.exe was missing from the list of processes in the taskmanager so i added it and then everything came back. but then like 10 secs later it disappeared again. I can use most of my programs through the task manager. I did a Hijack This, as i have seen a lot of people with this problem do. Here is the log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 3:25:52 PM, on 12/22/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16473) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system\winmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon .exe C:\Program Files\AIM6\aim6.exe C:\Program Files\AIM6\aolsoftware.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\imapi.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.comcast.net/toolbar2.0/search/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/customize/yessentials_cq/defaults/sp/*http://www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.myspace.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/msgr8/*http://www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/msgr8/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sp/msgr8/*http://www.yahoo.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Windows Internet Explorer provided by Comcast R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {FC0F30CD-E949-4148-884E-DC0F3D32EA46} - (no file) R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file) O3 - Toolbar: McAfee VirusScan - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshl.dll O3 - Toolbar: GoodSearch Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-95BA-ED6DB186BE32} - C:\PROGRA~1\GOODSE~1\GOODSE~1.DLL O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Guest Norm Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 RE: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar?? I am having the same problem. I downloaded some updates from microsoft and lost the Start button and the icons at the bottom of the desktop. If you find out something please let me know at <bourquen@yahoo.com> and I'll do the same, if you get me your email address. Guest kanga_66 Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Re: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar?? Yes you will lose most of your files i dumped my computer and it took me 4-5 hours just to download my windows explorer. everytime i downloaded a newer version i had to re-start my computer. then i lost my sound driver. it has taken me over a month and countless sessions with hp to restore it and somehow i lucked into doing it myself if you can back up everything then i would recommend doing that first before you do anything else. hopefully you won't have the same problems that i had thankfully i have restored everyting back to what i had before i dumped everyting "raparten" wrote: > Yes, I tried that... Guest Crazy-t23 Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 RE: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar?? Hello. I had the same type of things happen to me starting yesterday on both my desktop and laptop, except mine seems worse than what others have reported. It all started when i was trying to update certain everyday programs such as windows media player and active X by downloading the new software from the internet (from seemingly trusted sites) onto my desktop - which was not running any kind of virus protection or firewalls, which turned out to be a major mistake on my part. mine started with flashing of my desktp icons, a newly viewed walpaper stating that my PC in having fatal flaws due to spyware and displayed a link to download removal software, and finally i had a small triangle icon in the taskbar tray which gave a message...... "Your PC has been infected with spyware, run full system scan after download" and after clinking in the message, i was automatically drawn to a site where i could download 2 spyware softwares to remove them from my computer.... Spymaxx and some other one. the link from the wallpaper took me to the same site (some windows.privacy.....). The whole thing seemed a bit fishy to me so i did not install the software then roughly every 5-10 minutes, the triangle icon kept popping up messages, but with different ones regarding, ... spyware can allow access to your bank account and passwords, security at risk, etc. Plus i would also get red warning boxes pop up stating the name of the possible harmful file and stated the threat was from "coolwebsearch." The files those windows displayed were similar to the ones that listed in the first post above: lsass.exe, funny.exe, systeem.exe, accesss.exe, and many others. I then ran a search for the "funny.exe" file on my harddrives and found it in exactly the same folder as the first posting: in the c:\windows\ folder. What appeared different for me than what others have reported was that when i tried to access my task manager by using ctlr alt delete, an error message popped up stating that "Administrator has disabled program" which i, the administrator and owner, never did and before yesterday, my task manager would always pop up. This made me really nervous and in an effort to keep someone from gaining access to my desktop files, i disconnected the cable from the modem as a security measure until i could figure out this spyware and remove it. I then proceeded to run my previously installed anti virus, etc, programs including Fix It and a 100 dollar system mechanic professional from iolo, which both would detect the trojans, worms, and other spywares just fine, but when it came to remove them, system mechanic would ALWAYS get to the same spyware and hang, not deleting any of them. plus Fix it would attempt to remove them, but most were unable too due to the "program or file still running" and recommended i reboot my computer and run their program again...which i tried several times - having to do hard restarts to my desktop due to the spyware obviously interfering with my normal shutdown process. when nothing worked i tried to go in manually to remove the programs and change my settings back to normal. everytime i tried to change my wallpaper back to it's original state, it would work for a few seconds, then the spyware wallpaper would show back up with yet another message from the triangle (which by the way would alway disappear when i moved my mouse on top of the icon). in my efforts to remove the spyware programs manally, i would have several system crashes and have to do a hard restart again and again. I went out and bought two more anti-spyware programs (Window Live OneCare and also the karesky? anti virus that was mentioned above because it sounding promising on the box). i tried to install both, but neither would come up to install, even after clicking on the drive to initiate the setup installer. Now what i have not yet mentioned, was that i had my new laptop (vista ultimate), which was wirelessly connected to the same broadband modem, but was not installing anything on it, it was just simply on. It too had been infected and was running the same programs in the background and denied me access to my task manager. plus it kept openning several internet windows to different sites one right after another.... about 20 of them! I used some of the features preinstalled on the vista system (windows defender) and i assume that something had worked, since after a quick reboot, i was able to access my task manager again and able to install both the OneCare and anti-virus softwares. just using the one care, it was able to remove all of the threats and i was able to set up personal settings and a firewall never to allow access without my approval first. as of now all seems to be working properly on my laptop, but i am currently trying to copy my pictures, documents, and some of my music to CDs so that i can recover my computer and restore it to it's originally factory system. I came upon this string of posts after trying to find out if certain files that were trying to gain access to my computer were denied access by myself using the firewall features at startup are related to spyware, or if they are actually needed to have my laptop run correctly. the files/programs that i am currently blocking are: bonjour service and mxtask background service. does anyone have any knowledge of these files/programs and are they a threat? I know my message is a bit long, but i figured long detailed accounts of my steps would help others not to waste several hours trying to repair their computer as well. My personal thoughts regarding these programs/spyware, is that it was sent to me in an effort for me to utilize and purchase the software the spy ware was linked too, to remove it as if the creators of the software were also the ones who created and sent out the spyware in order to gain profits from it. (On my laptop i did go through the recommended scan from a demo version of the software, which it was able to pick up all the files the my computer was continuously notifying me about. But to remove the spyware you of course had to purchase their software for 50 dollars first). i will definatelly continue to use firewall and have anti-virus software from here on out! Guest ydoc Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 RE: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar?? QUOTE "I came upon this string of posts after trying to find out if certain files that were trying to gain access to my computer were denied access by myself using the firewall features at startup are related to spyware, or if they are actually needed to have my laptop run correctly. the files/programs that i am currently blocking are: bonjour service and mxtask background service. does anyone have any knowledge of these files/programs and are they a threat? " ------------------------------ I am having some of the same problems with my own system. I am still trying to solve it. My first problem was when my desktop background changed into a bright blue back, with a rectangle in the middle with "Your computer may be infected with spyware" blah blah. Well with that it took away my configuration tabs on the desktop properties, so I am not able to change my powerscheme or screensaver, or the color or the picture! I disabled xp theme and went with classic to limit the control the program has over things. Helped in the way that it then gave me the whole "Active desktop recovery" background with the "restore" button on it. it seemed to help for a minute, but didn't give me back my tabs. My color depth seems to change randomly, noted by the pics or icons within IE (fuzzy and dull). When windows starts up, a randomly alphanumeric service runs, and it seems to be the cause. Disable it and computer runs faster, but now it has progressed to the point that exporer no longer loads automatically, and I have no form of a start menu/task bar. Usually when you manually run explorer from task manager, the start menu will show itself. Not now. I do have input on what the Bonjour service is, in my opinion "EVIL" but the technical side of it, ADOBE license node produced by Apple Computers. Problems are all I see it cause. It also gives way to a service by the name of mDns.dll or something similar. If you have fireworks, flash or anything else made by monopoly ie:ADOBE it will automatically install. If you look under mmc services, you will see it as the only service that is alphanumeric and usually at the top given a alphabetic sort order. I disable it, and everything still works. Hope this might help, sorry if it doesn't. Good luck.-
Guest Crazy-t23 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 RE: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar?? Thanks. I went through a complete destructive system restore which my HP came pre-installed with in a seperate hard drive....glad it did. It just restored my desktop back to the same system and settings as when we first turned it on. It was probably needing a complete restore anyway with all the stuff installed and uninstalled on it over that last 5 years!! We just had to go in and re-install all the programs we actually use and download drivers from the net for our printer, etc. It is just taking a while to update everything from Microsoft.... SP 2 and 3, and all the security updates that have occured over the last 5 years. I believe we have 3 or 4 virus and spyware protections on it now..... hopefully together they stop all threats like this from happening ever again in the future. Guest gypsy Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 RE: no desktop icons, start menu, task bar?? I have had alot of problems in the past and learned the hardway about what can be deleted and what can't be undone, but will try anything and everything to have my pc working like new. One reason why I don't worry about consequences is because I keep a backup (on cd) of everything I want to save. I have Operating System software which will repair almost anything (except Explorer, which I unistalled once )The other reason is because if my PC is having problems that I can't fix or if PC is sluggish, I'll take my PC down, format to Zero and reinstall Windows etc. I have OS, WinXP, WinXP 2, Applications and Drivers software which came with my PC so it makes it easy. Matter of fact, once a year, I'll update my backup and delete, uninstall EVERYTHING off my Pc, take it down to zero and reinstall Windows. Its great, like having a new pc. Been doing this for 10 yrs and have no problems. I'm not a computer nerd (wish I were) just bought a few "Dummie" books and learned by trial and error. I know alot of people don't clean pc as they have it scheduled to clean itself, but if your not on the pc at that time what good is it ??? I have Registry Mechanic which is a good tool, also you can go to download.com and download CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) for "free" which will CLEAN everything even if you think you are emptying your temp files, you'll be surprised what is left behind! It will also delete your passwords to web sites so you'll have to login first time. It also has "Scan for Issues" which will help solve ALOT of problems, but make sure you click 'yes' to backup changes so you can undo if there is a problem with an issue, if so, see which issue you want to keep and delete the rest. When I click yes to backup, I'll put a date on it, so I just keep the latest one and delete the other each time I do it. But I've never had a problem and know its safe. I hope I explained this ok, its so much easier "showing" someone, isn't it?? lolol Well, I hope it all goes well for you who have the problems with task bar, start and Explorer and flashing screens... I would install CCleaner and if it can't fix it uninstall Explorer, defrag & scan disk then re-install. Also, try rebooting F8/F3 and thats where you'll find your BIOS/Dos settings or clicking on "Return Computer to Default Settings" which should work. Good Luck! > Hello. Guest b-radp-fife09 Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Windows XP Updater.exe NOT FOUND Windows XP Updater.exe NOT FOUND Hi I'm your average person with an above average problem. See a couple days ago I got on my desktop and found that it is missing the Updater.exe file for windows. This means that it can no longer receive updates from microsoft, which is extremely vital. I looked around for it in Microsoft, but, unfortunately, they have no where to download the file or anyway to restore it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! ~Brad

No. Assuming that you are not the Original Poster (and next time please make a new post including all your pertinent information instead of sticking your issue into someone else's thread - this is not said to hurt your feelings but rather to help us help you), you are infected with malware which you need to clean up. Your system is infected with a rogue antivirus program. It is called "rogue" because it pretends to be A Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them! Because you didn't give me the name of the program that is trying to get you to buy it, I can't point you to specific removal steps. Look for them here: Bleeping Computer removal how-to's - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html Malwarebytes malware removal guides - http://tinyurl.com/5xrpft If you are infected with XP Antivirus or Antivirus 209/10, here are removal steps: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/uninstall-antivirus-2009 http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic154529.html (earlier versions) Removal instructions for Antivirus 2010: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6703 Removal instructions for Antivirus 2009: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5178 These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the computer will also be infected with Zlob and/or Vundo trojans and protected by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean. If your machine is one of these cases, either get guided help at one of the specialty forums below OR back up your data and do a clean install of Windows. It is your choice. If you are unsure how to back up your data or how to do a clean install, you can take your machine to a local computer professional. I don't recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of places.
