Hi

I bought a used processor, CPU and installed it, but the computer would only power up and not boot up. I installed my old processor and it worked fine. I later downloaded a Bios upgrade for the new processor and changed to Bios default in my setup menu as instructed but my computer would not boot up again only powering up. I then changed back to my old processor and the computer will now only power up with this too. Please help!

Regards

Hi

We need more info like CPU, motherboard model, and PSU. Your PSU may be the culprit, not enough power for the new processor. We can rule this out but we need more than you have provided.

Looks like you bought a used faulty cpu .I take it forgranted it matches your board

Assumin its all compatible.....

I have recently had trouble with my pc not booting up. the reason? The heatsink and processor have a special paste between em to get the heat from the cpu to the sink. The paste in mine had all but gone. £1.99 in maplin and its as good as new!

I had a diagnosis from a so-called pc repair man (anybody thinks they can do that job, eh?) and he said it was either the processor or motherboard had died.

Where did it go I am wondering?

there could not have been enough in the first place lol

@senna You do not need a lot all it has to do is fill any imperfections in the metal so heat transfer is efficient also I only use artic silver the 1.99 stuff from maplin aint gonna be much cop :)

I would think that it would take some time for the CPU to get hot enough to cause a problem. Even without a heat sink, I think a machine would boot and survive for at least a few minutes before seeing signs of a problem.

Of course, I'm not a computer builder and don't have experience in operating a CPU without a heat sink.
