new Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 My pc doesn't seem to read my memory cards anymore (they used to work fine). And also it doesn't recognise usbs and my ipod when i connect them. I am running Windows XP. Please help me find out what is wrong. Quote
starams5 Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 (edited) Hi First make sure all of your motherboard drivers are up-to-date. In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to wake up properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help. Start/Run. In the run box type "regedit" without the quotes and press enter. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Usb Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC. Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack. Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure "Show hidden devices" is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order: 1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.) 2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) (I hope you have a PS/2 keyboard or mouse for this step). 3. USB Root Hub(s) 4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers) Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in. Be aware that some USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in. Edited May 22, 2009 by starams5 Quote

Tootech Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Hi new, Can you have a look in Device Manager at the USB Root Hubs - do have a yellow exclamation or question mark against them? Also, what happens when you plug in one of your USB devices? Do you see any error messages? Quote

Also, what happens when you plug in one of your USB devices? Do you see any error messages? No they are no yellow exclamation marks or question marks. When i plug in a usb device, it just doesn't show up in my computer, therefore i can't access it. Quote

maynardvdm Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Try this: Right-Click My Computer and select Properties Click on the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager Click the + by Universal Serial Bus controllers Right-click on each one and select uninstall A box will appear, just click OK After uninstalling them all, Restart your computer Windows should now automatically install the USB drivers again Quote We are all members helping other members. Tootech Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Hi new, After some consideration we think that the best way, and at this point perhaps the only way to resolve the problems is to do a full Windows reinstall. We have been through all of the standard checks, uninstalled your USB to allow Windows to rebuild it and the problem persists. Looking back, the malware may well have damaged your Windows installation beyond repair. The guys over at Malware Removal advised a fulll rebuild as a security precaution and we agree. You need to back up all of your documents, email etc and reinstall Windows. We are happy to help you with the rebuild if you need it. Quote
zinglebarb Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 has the op tried setting up a different user just in case some user specific files were messed up when the spyware was having a fieldday? Quote Q9550 P5Q pro mobo 4 gig pc8500 ATI 4870 Scythe CPU cooler Vista X64 5 HDDs 3 optical OCZ modular psu
RandyL Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 To my knowledge no. However this appears to be basic system files that are damaged. Considering all the issues that we know about the only way to rule this out is to do a complete reinstall. Besides MU suggested that for long term security and corruption this would be the best course. It's doubtful this is just a profile corruption but there is a chance it is something else. Short of replacing hardware for no apparent reason the best course is to reinstall. A fair question you asked though. In some situations it is the case. zinglebarb Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 could be registry corruption in current user . I agree with the reformat but the user change is part of my process of elimination. Quote Q9550 P5Q pro mobo 4 gig pc8500 ATI 4870 Scythe CPU cooler Vista X64 5 HDDs 3 optical OCZ modular psu
new Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 Dam i guess i will have to reformat, but what about if i want to back up my data? Quote
RandyL Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Since your card reader and USB devices don't work backing up by burning your data to CD's is probably your best option. Remember though not to run the risk of reinfection. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. new Posted June 12, 2009 Author Posted June 12, 2009 ok, um quick question about reformating. If i have my hard drive is separated into 2 partions, which it is atm. Can i just just reformat the main C drive, and keep the data and files on my other E drive so that i wont lose those files? Quote
maynardvdm Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 (edited) Hi Yes if you format C, nothing will happen to E, so your data will still be there. Edit: Just DO NOT delete the partition.
