Guest ed r Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Once bootup progresses through Post, Autoexec and runs AVG boot search which reports all is ok. Boot up then hangs with a blinking cursor in the top right hand corner of the screen. From the startup menu: I ran the system startup troubleshooter to no avail. I ran Registry Restore, none of the 5 options helped. I then ran AVG from the desktop and got a message stating xxxxxxxxxxx Finally I ran a logged bootup and found the Marlet font had failed to load and from that point on everything else failed to load also. Will replacing the Marlet font file resolve the problem?
Guest glee Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Re: Win 98 SE Hangs During Boot Up Your hidden Marlett font is either missing or damaged. I don't know that replacing it will solve all the other failures, but it is a first step. If you still have the same problems after replacing the Marlett font per my earlier reply, try disabling the AVG boot scan. This can be done from within AVG's settings, or by disabling the processing of the autoexec.bat file at startup. How long have you had AVG installed? Did you have, or do you currently have, any other anti-virus programs installed? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.net/ http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm

Had I entered that info I'm sure it would have helped solve the problem. The messages were: 1..Partition Table [MBR] 2. Boot sector of Disk Reading Errors. When I reread that info a dim light bulb went on in my head. Months ago I had purchased Steve Gibsons SpinRite 6.0 (http://WWW.GRC.COM) figuring in might come in handy some day. What better test than to fix a Boot Sector reading problem. So in went the SpinRite floppy, selected level 4 then start. Having read that level 4 takes forever and a day to do whatever it is that it does I went to bed. Next day I went back,SpinRite was done. After 7 hours it had found and recovered data from 3 bad sectors. Crossing my fingers I booted the PC. Ha! It worked! Now I'm left wondering, When Googling on (Loadfailed=) for help info with this problem I saw dozens if not hundreds of posts. Could my solution work for them?
