Guest Angel Posted December 26, 2007 Posted December 26, 2007 When I try to install the Critical Update "Net Framework 1.1, I get an error box that says I have done an "Illegal operation" When I click on details I get this answer in error box " REGSVCS executed an invalid instruction in module at MSCORWKS.DLL at 0167:791d054a" Please help? This is an old small computer that I am trying to get to work right. It is a Pentium 166. Win 98SE, 4.10.2222B. Angel

Guest Angel Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question Hi PA Bear, I tried that and it did not work. I could not do anything with the "KB867460-X86.exe", The .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. It would not install, would not even open. It took a while to type it into the address bar and download it onto the desk top. I had to use dialup on that computer. Nothing is wrong with Gary's disk. Guest Angel Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question Hi PA.Bear, No .NET Framework versions on the computer in the Add/Remove Programs. The computer was reformatted and I have no drivers for either the Sound Card nor the modem. This is an old computer I got from a woman I know. Her Computer guy had taken off the stuff and information her son had on it. My grandson did the reformat but did not have the drivers to the Sound Card nor the Modem. The woman's computer reinstalled the drivers. So right now, the computer is working okay. I thought the .NET Framework was needed because it was in the updates. Maybe it is not needed. This is a small computer with 3.99 MG RAM. Another question: What is the site for the old version of Zone Alarm. This small computer is on dial up. I need a firewall program for it. This small computer is on dial up. I need a firewall > program for it. Don't waste your time with a firewall for windows 98, especially if you're on dial-up. Windows 98 is not vulnerable to any network-based worms or port-scanning threats. You might want to un-plug your phone line going to the modem when you're not on-line. There are phone dialers out there that will call expensive toll numbers and leave you with charges on your phone bill. Firewall software won't detect or stop them.
Guest Angel Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question PA. Bear, When I went up to the Windows Update Site, it had one update I should get. That one was KB913433. I tried to install it and it failed. I had tried 4 times and no luck. I found the old version of the ZoneAlarm for the Windows 98 and installed it. The website is: http://www.oldversion.com the version: 61.744.001 Because the computer is so slow it took a long time to download it. Dialup speed does not help neither. Guest Angel Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question Hi, I typed in that link and it said the page was unavailable. Then I went to find/files typed in 'Flash'. I could not find the version of This file came up: 'com_microsopt.windows.Windows 98_ME_913433_FLASH" it was in the 'C:\WUTemp' file. In it was the install for it. I clicked on it and it asked me if I wanted to install it. I clicked 'yes'. This came up"The version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install' The title of the update was 'KB913433-x86-ENU.exe' Question: Why did the update site say I was supposed to install it on my computer? Guest PA Bear Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question Try the Solution here (ignore everything else): http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=7d1862a&sliceId=1 (In short, download & run Flash Player uninstaller then install Flash Player v9.0.115.0) That error was telling you that a later version of Flash was installed (i.e., Flash 7 or higher). After uninstalling Flash Player and installing the newest version: 1. Reboot into Safe Mode and delete the contents of C:\WUTemp folder. 2. Reboot into Windows, go to Windows Update website, do a CUSTOM scan again and then "hide" KB913433. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Angel wrote: > Hi, > > I typed in that link and it said the page was unavailable. > > Then I went to find/files typed in 'Flash'. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question Angel, it is common to find that some Updates will not install, either because they have been made obsolete by newer updates or some other reason makes your machine ineligible for the update. It is even *more* common when the machine you're updating is so freaking old. If you had gone to Windows Updates, more likely than not, the update you're having problems with would not be offered. Or, if this is Windows 98 First Edition, you may need the SP1 update. http://grystmill.com/downloads/win98sp1.zip -- Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question Angel, I'm in the middle of updating a new installation of Win98SE and when I went to Windows Updates, I, too, got that failed installation. Twice. Then I went to Adobe.com and installed the latest Flash Player, then went back to WU and the Update was no longer offered. My guess is that the original Flash player that's installed with Win98SE isn't new enough for the update, and the latest version of the Player put in a "flag" that says for Windows Update to consider the patch installed. I suggest you follow the instructions Robear's gave you for cleaning up after the failed installation, then go to Adobe.com and get the latest Player. And, Angel, get a wireless adapter for that machine, OK? You already have a wireless access point (2-Wire router). Get rid of that awful dial-up. -- Gary S. Guest Angel Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Re: Net Framework 1.1 question PA Bear, I went into the Find F/F and discovered that the Flash Player was 'Swflash' Version 5.0.44.0. DOS name SWFLASH.OCX I had a problem with the Media Player 9. It kept coming up with the 'flag' "Illegal operation". I then rolled it back to the original Media Player for now (Version 4.10.9999) Media Player 2. DOS name: MDPLAYER.EXE. Does having a different Sound card have anything to do with these 2 problems? The Sound card is: "Advance Sound".
