youtube access problem

My internet connection works but I can't access http://www.youtube.com via

either IE or Mozilla. I'm running XP & am able to ping the site.

I've disabled the firewall and virus protection to no avail. I'm on a

wireless network and can access youtube via my laptop but not my

desktop. Any suggestions?

This is almost never the cause, but I thought I'd suggest it anyway.

Reset the hosts file DNS information as described in the following KB

article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/219843/en-us

Re: youtube access problem

Elmo,

Surely the hosts file is read only so what would have changed the hosts file entries

unless the OP done them directly as an malware wouldn't change it for just 2 domains

What does happen? That will give us a clue.

For example, if, in attempting to access a site, your computer emits white

smoke, we can probably conclude your computer has elected a new Pope.

Sorry - In IE7 when I enter "www.youtube.com" it defults to the

Ask.com web search page and if I click on the youtube link I get the

message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

With the Mozilla browser I get the "Unable to Connect" error box

stating that Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at

http://www.youtube.com.

I don't have problems hitting any other sites that I'm aware of.

Two thoughts:

1. Your parents are using a program like NetNanny to block YouTube.

2. You're pirating a signal from someone who is blocking YouTube.

Other than that, no ideas...

Not pirating a signal and my parents are in their 80's and don't spend

time blocking sites on my computer. The only parental controls on my

machine that I'm aware of run via the McAfee Security Center and I

still have the problem even when I disable it.

I took it as far as Time Warner Cable's support desk was willing to

go, but believe me it wasn't very far, they basically told me to "get

lost"

Try going into the following folder

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

rename the file called Hosts to Nohosts (n.b. this file has NO filename

extension)

I would refer you to the following website

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
