Whenever I try to update my iPod or put pictures from my phone onto my computer, I simply can't.

What happens is:

  • The bubble pops up reading "New Hardware Found"
  • I click on it and have two options "Install software automatically" or "Install software manually". I usually choose automatically
  • It takes some time "searching" for the correct software and finally tells me "The software could not be found. Your new hardware may not work properly"

The problem I personally have with this, is that iPods only require iTunes to work (as far as I know) and it's the same with any hardware that I try to connect via the USB port. I've spoken with some friends and they suggest I need a new USB board (or something like that), but I'm hoping someone knows a different way to solve my problem without paying out too much.

I JUST WANT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC!!! :P

I hope that you can all understand my problem

Any help would be more than appreciated

Thanks again :)

Ben

Hello Ben I will input a little here for you and I am sure others will jump in and help to.

I am fairly new to the world of iPods and MP3/4 players.

Have you installed the software that either comes supplied with your iPod and the driver or downloaded the latest software and driver from your iPods manufacturers website?

Yeah I quite literally just updated to iTunes v8.1.1. Which is pretty flash by the way :)

and my iPod is the 3rd generation Nano if that means anything to you :P

But it's not just my iPod, it's all USB related things. Such as printers for example. I genuinely don't know what's wrong :(

Can we try to uninstall and reinstall all of your USB ports.

Unplug all of your USB devices from your computer.

Follow these instructions

  • Right-Click My Computer and select Properties
  • Click on the Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager
  • Click the + by Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • Right-click on each one and select uninstall
  • A box will appear, just click OK
  • After uninstalling them all, Restart your computer
  • Windows should now automatically install the USB drivers again

Then plug all of your devices back in, including your iPod

Ben do you have SP3 installed?

Ok your having issues with all your USB.

Lets try this.

Click start scroll to my computer and open properties.

Click on hardware tab then device manager.

Use + to open the drop down box next to USB.

Choose update driver.

Do this for each USB item in the list.

Or:

Right click on each item and choose uninstall.

Uninstall all the USB items then restart the computer.

Found new hardware wizard will reinstall them.

Or:

Or you can download the latest chipset driver for your computer as this contains USB hardware drivers then in device manager right click on each USB item listed and choose update driver. These drivers can be downloaded from your computer manufacturers website under support tab.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the help.

I tried the uninstall thing but my computer wont automatically re-install them. It comes up with the same "found new hardware" and then asked if I want to install it automatically or manually. I think maybe there could be an issue there with my computer? About recognizing other devices perhaps. I don't have a clue, I know how to use a computer not how to fix it :P. But then if that's the case, surely I shouldnt be able to connect to the internet...

Any more helpful advice?

Many thanks :)

The drivers may of become corrupt.

Do you have service pack 3 installed?

I would uninstall the drivers.

Download your latest chipset then reinstall the USB drivers.

Ok well, it seemed to take forever to download it last night, but I have it now.

My computer tried installing the the USB's again but it said "Cannot install the hardware". And it's because it can't find the software to go with the USB's :S.

Any more suggestions please?

Thanks

Hi.

All the information below is from starams5 from this forum. Here is the link to the original post http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/hard-drives-pen-flash-and-usb/6931-card-reader-and-usb-problems.html the person who this information was writen for was having the same problem as you.

First make sure all of your motherboard drivers are up-to-date.

In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to wake up properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help.

Start/Run. In the run box type "regedit" without the quotes and press enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Usb

Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.

Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.

Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure "Show hidden devices" is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order:

1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.)

2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) (I hope you have a PS/2 keyboard or mouse for this step).

3. USB Root Hub(s)

4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers)

Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in. Be aware that some USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.

Hope this is some help to you.

thanks a lot.

I appreciate the help, but I'll try and finish what Jelly Bean is helping me to do first. Then I'll move onto those methods.

Thanks very much :)
