Windows Home Server

Hello.

I was thinking looking at those manufacturer's Windows Home Server's specification that sells in retail store (I live in USA).

Most of them was like I didn't like specifications of those.

So, I was thinking.

What if I build my own Windows Home Server?

So, I looked into manufacturer's Windows Home Server's specification and thought of what component that I should have.

Of course I figured out what component I want for my Windows Home Server, if I decided to build it.

I know I have to get OEM version of Windows Home Server from online or retail store.

But the thing was, the specification of basic component of Windows Home Server.

I mean the manufacturers of each basic types of components for Windows Home Server.

For example, looking at CPU, Motherboard, and PSU like.

For CPU and Motherboard, I should think of whether I get Intel CPU and Chipset based Motherboard or not.

Anyway.

Hope I can get some advices from all of you here.

The main thing is what are you going to use it for. Is it going to be a file server a media server a web server all of the above? One of the main concerns for me would be power consumption you have a nice pc would you need a power hungry machine buzzing away 24/7?

I will be using for a file server and a media server.

My house has about 4 desktops and 4 laptops.

And I will be backing up all of them for back up purpose.

And going to stream and share various types of media files, including HD contents.

have you considered building a NAS ? mini itx mobo plenty of ram raid controller couple of hard drives Free Nas operating system and best of all low power consumption.

 

Incidentally I serve a media centre PC , my daughters laptop my second machine and any machine I am working on all just from my main machine anyway. if you see my spec below there is plenty of storage. The media centre streams wireless HD content included while the laptop and the rest are wired

Have you ever heard of Windows Home Server?

That's what I was going to use as OS.

And it is selling from some retail stores with the hardware, just like any other OEM OS.

I've heard of it too aj but I profess to know little about it.

 

I have no idea about the advantages, disadvantages or differences..

 

Does anyone know exactly what the situation is with the Windows Server?

I was trying to offer a simple cheaper to run system. If you want to build another computer on your network and burn 200 - 300 watts an hour or 6 kilowatts a day (as servers tend to be left on is this the case?) or 219 quid a year based on 250 watts idle usage running 24 hours a day and average of 10p per kilowatt hour

 

There is of course nothing I guess stopping you from building the same itx kit and throwing WHS at it though

I asked about Windows Home Server building...

Not the NAS.

He typed like I didn't know NAS and Home Server.

And if you say so, fine.

FINE, I WILL SEEK ADVICE FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE THEN!!!!!!!!
