im gonna fly in the face of common opinion and say ill be sticking with Vista x64 for a while yet anyway. May well dual boot with 7 but I am not as impressed as most with it so far and XP mode is a joke give me VMware anyday :)

I think many people won't upgrade very quickly. There's bound to be those who rush to buy Windows 7 but it may more start to filter through as people get new computers. Cost will also be a factor. Have definite prices been talked about yet?

I wonder how necessary XPM will be to the home user when most programs seem to install and run under Windows 7 anyway. Have a look at this thread. It lists programs that have been found to work.

I'll be grabbing it on day one, 64bit Ultimate. I think Microsoft had confirmed that Win7 will be releasing in October a few weeks ago. Looking forward to it :D

Have yet to find a program which doesn't work in Windows7, and I've been throwing everything at it, from work software to games as far back as Starcraft.

Only had a few issues with GTAIV but fixed those fairly easily.

I had one program that wouldn't install straightaway but Windows 7 handled that successfully. Installing Xara Xtreme (a drawing program) produced a Xara message saying words to the effect that the operating system is not supported, please install the program on one that is. I closed the installation down and a message from Windows 7 popped up asking if I want to apply 'Recommended settings' for installing the the program. When the option was accepted, Xara Xtreme installed and worked OK.

I also may wait a while before giving Windows 7 a go, but not too long as this desktop is getting long in the tooth. However that "Recommended settings" option seems a good one. Is this new altogether or is something similar in Vista?

I do know in XP there is the option to run programs in an earlier version environment, but I never found it to work, but then again the program I was trying was ancient so gave up on it.

Well, on the one hand we hear that compatibility for programs designed to run on earlier operating systems isn't going to be supported unless via XPM(ode). Yet on the other hand, Windows 7 is still has the capability of applying a compatibility setting so that Xara Xtreme could be installed. A grey area in the knowledge for me there.

If Windows 7 does that ...and runs most other programs, it looks like XPM isn't going to be needed by most users.

Check out what MS say about XPM.. it's for businesses that have serious compatibility requirements which cannot be met by the simple compatibility mode, not casual users, so most users will never even mess with it.

XPM is only going to be in Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions.

Thanks DarkLord7854 - When reading about XPM, I at first thought it would be needed in order to install/run older software ..full-stop. No installation compatibility or anything without installing it. I'm glad that's not going to be the case. As you say, it looks as if XPM is something we won't have to worry about. I suppose we could be indirectly affected if businesses experience problems but we'll see how it all pans out in the fullness of time.

Yea, I can see how it's misleading, there was a little snippet about it on Engadget:

Virtualized Windows XP coming to Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate users

However I doubt you'll ever need to use XPM (if you get Ultimate/Business) as anything that runs in Vista, and a lot of stuff that doesn't run in Vista, runs on Windows 7 just fine or by right clicking, properties, and setting compatibility mode to XP SP3. Sometimes Win7 will also do this automatically, which is rather neat.

I've been using Windows 7 here at work and haven't had a single issue so far, I don't really use outdated software though as it's a web design firm. Then again, if someone is upgrading to a new OS but wants to stay with really old, legacy, programs.. then he/she might as well just stay with XP, rather seems to defeat the point of upgrading to a new OS lol :p

Xara Xtreme, the program I have that didn't install directly, isn't very old. Version 4.0 was released on April 2008. Strange really because CorelDraw 9 is quite a bit older than that (December 1999) and it installed without needing a compatibility setting.

When I get a new computer, perhaps early next year, I'll get Windows 7. Getting a new computer with the OS of the day seems the right thing to do. I probably won't want to upgrade these two programs though because they do what I want of them. That would be my own reason for upgrading the OS but not necessarily the software that runs on it.

I have read that XPM is available zinglebarb but my processor doesn't support it.

Ah yes, XPM requires hardware virtualization which is a bit odd, and not all the latest Intel CPUs support it, a bit lame, but AMDs do.

And that's a bit odd for XaraXtreme, maybe that issue will disappear come full retail, we shall see, fingers crossed ;)

I will be waiting until Service Pack 2 comes out.

I have seen some rumor or news about that they are already working on Service Pack 1

The next generation of Windows will be launched this autumn with a touch sensitive screen which could spell the end of the mouse.

Microsoft announced it will roll out Windows 7, which will take the place of the unpopular Windows Vista, from October 22.

The launch is months ahead of schedule and the operating system will be ready for Christmas buyers.

Nine out of ten of the world's computers run on Windows software.

Last year the software giant made about a third of its £60bn income from selling the operating system.

Windows Vista has been attacked for being too complicated and Microsoft bosses hope the new system will restore public confidence in the product.

Reviews of Windows 7 have praised its consumer-friendly features.

Users with touch-sensitive screens will be able to control their computers with the touch of a finger, rather than with a keyboard and mouse.

The device, as popularised on the iPhone and iPod Touch by Apple, is a direct challenge to Microsoft's arch-rival.

Microsoft is battling against a growing market in netbooks - smaller PCs ideal for surfing online and emailing.

One of the leading manufacturers, Acer, has become the first to announce a line of small PCs to run Google's new Android operating system.

Free upgrades to the new system will be offered to computer buyers shortly ahead of the launch.

Microsoft said: "We’ve produced the best Windows operating system ever, designed according to how people want to use it.

"The primary focus throughout the development of Windows 7 has been quality."

The mouse ain't going to die. Touchscreens are nice but nowhere near as practical as a mouse currently ;)

Naughty naughty large quote and no link to the original lol

Are they actually saying "launched this autumn with a touch sensitive screen which could spell the end of the mouse" or "launched this autumn ,with a touch sensitive screen which could spell the end of the mouse"

Are they really going to ship an OS with a screen? what a difference a comma makes lol

I just can't help thinking about all the fingermarks. The grandchildren get threatened with awful things if they touch the monitor screen. It would come as a complete shock if I told them it was OK to touch it. Poor kids wouldn't know if they were coming or going! :)

That's true. I don't think I'll get a suitable monitor though. I'm just too used to the mouse.

Yes but monitors do not last forever. If my screen was to die when I am running Win 7 or later and the price difference between a touch one and a standard TFT is not great ill buy the new tech
