CAL Licensing is broken, one server is off in its own little world

Hey guys,

I want to apologize in advance if this has been written about

elsewhere, but I've searched nearly everything that I could find with

no luck.

The licensing system on my work network is horked. We have three

machines running Windows 2003 standard, but one was upgraded via the

transition pack from Win2003 SBS. It won't acknowledge the User CALs

we bought for it, so I've had to install a bunch of fake Per Server

CALs on each computer til I can figure out whats going on.

Now, I'm not really privy on helping Microsoft police us, but I like

the fact that we know where we are in terms of license usage and so I

can know when I need to buy more.

The thing is, two of the servers (the original 2003 Standard machines)

seem to be off in their own little world seperate from Server E.

The rundown:

Server E - Windows 2003 SBS to Std. : Domain Controller role, exchange

server, misc apps

Server S - Windows 2003 Standard : Domain Controller role, file

server, database server

Server B - Windows 2003 Standard : Terminal Services role, also

handles WSUS and is a VM Host

In the licensing control panel, Server S can enumerate the network

fine under the "server browser" tab, but it can only see the network's

computers and itself under the domain. Server B can only see itself

under the domain. And Server E, upon clicking the "Server browser"

tab, pops up a dialog box that says "The operation completed

successfully" and nothing happens when I click the "Enterprise" expand

box.

When I had the User CALs installed it quickly ran out of licenses and

it seemed unable to properly assign the CALs to the users, so I had to

install a bunch of Per Server CALs to restore functionality. I'd like

to get this corrected in the off chance we for some reason get

audited.

I would really like to get this stuff working so we can input it

correctly and have the licensing info properly replicate.

Thanks,

Tom

Probably never going to happen. The license logging service has not - does

not - and probably will never work as expected. It is not needed or

necessary. Just stop and disable the license logging service on all the

servers and keep track of your licenses as if in perseat mode.

One additional caveat. If you are running the TS-licensing service on that

computer, you can't disable the licensing service. Now that you are not

tracking SBS licenses, you don't really need the service. As Danny says,

most people turn it off.
