spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 (edited) Hi, Can anybody help? I have a Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra9 Motherboard. I downloaded @BIOS from Gigabyte which is a BIOS updating program. I ran the program - and at about 50% of updating and error arised. I cancelled the update and when I rebooted my pc - that's when I hit a brick wall. I loads the front screen checking IDE drives etc.... But then at the bottom it says again: Detecting IDE Drives ... CMOS checksum error - DEfaults loaded If your Operation system has install on SATA HDD already. Please check SATA access mode and Hard Disk Boot Priority!! <F1>: to continue, <DEL>: BIOS Setup When I press either of the above the screen goes onto a flashing _ at the top left hand of screen and nothing else happens. I have tried to go into BIOS before it gets to this stage but nothing all other options are taken away and I am left with the above 2 choices. I tried to reset the bios and CMOS by removing the CMOS battery for 10 minutes as instructed by the manual but nothing. Iam using SATA drive with operating system on it. Have I killed the pc or is there a solution. Thanks for time and cooperation. Spyork Edited May 27, 2009 by spyork Quote
Jelly Bean Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Hello and welcome to the forum. Ok I hope others input and help as well but lets see what can be done. This issue is caused when the CMOS values are incorrect. This issue can occur because of any of the below possibilities. Bad or old CMOS battery. BIOS update. Disconnecting power from computer without shutting down computer. A few things to try: Ok you can try a new CMOS battery. Try an update of the BIOS again as the BIOS update you used may of been corrupt. It happens in many downloads. Or revert back to the old BIOS. Remove BIOS battery for upto one hour and see if that helps.Although the BIOS reset jumpers maybe the way to go. Possibly you need to download a SATA hard drive driver and install it. Load defaults in BIOS,is SATA enabled in BIOS? Jelly Bean. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 When flashing the bios, can you remember what the error said at 50%? If you cancelled the update you could be in deep ****. Quote
zinglebarb Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 if it was a bad bios flash you would see nothing at all the system is trying to post so its not dead. The bios has reset . Looks to me like default boot hd has changed. Do you get an option for boot menu so you can select your drive? Tootech Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Do you have a link to the flash you used, and did you run it from a floppy disk, or from Windows? Although the BIOS reset jumpers maybe the way to go. As Jelly says, use the Reset jumper. Pull the power or switch off at the mains, remove the battery, and short the reset pins for a couple of seconds. Then disconnect the Reset jumpers, and drop the battery back in. For the moment, disconnect all drives, inc CD/DVD drives, USB devices - if you have PS2 keyboard and mouse use those for now, and fire it back up. Can you enter the BIOS now? Quote
spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 No just the options to F1 continune and Del to enter BIOS but if u do either - it then goes to a blank screen as a flashing _ at top left hand screen. Quote
spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 I run the update from windows originally using GIGABYTE's update software - but no materr what happens it won't go into BIOS at all. By the jumper do u mean the CMOS Clear jumper? And what sequence to I do it? THank you all for your time in this matter Quote
Jelly Bean Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 The reset jumper on your mainboard this usaly consists of 4 pins and a little plastic jumper although some mainboards only have three pins. Yes the CMOS jumper. If you have four pins remove the jumper and place onto the two empty pins. Or if you have three pins then it would be on the middle pin and the empty pin. I asume you are four pins as you have a Gigabyte mainboard. Before restarting your machine please replace the jumper back onto the two origonal pins. Let me know how that goes. Jelly Bean. spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 No mine has nothing on it at all - just 2 pins - u have to add the jumper the CMOS CLR - and the turn on pc - for a minute but it think it just loads the CMOS defaults - but it does not seem to alter the BIOS version. Boo Hoo Quote
Jelly Bean Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Remove the battery for 30 mins. This doesnt look good if you cannot gain access to the BIOS settings. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
zinglebarb Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 A bios update resets the bios as standard. Just unplugging the battery will clear the cmos. Spy is there an option for boot select menu are you still getting the cmos warning you mentioned? spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 Thats what i thought if it won't reset i think i have buggered it...... time for EBAY then me thinks.... booo hhhooooooooo :-< Quote
zinglebarb Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 you can not enter set up pressing del when it gives the option? Quote Q9550 P5Q pro mobo 4 gig pc8500 ATI 4870 Scythe CPU cooler Vista X64 5 HDDs 3 optical OCZ modular psu
spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 Yes there a choice at the start but when it run through its detecting it then removes the choices of recovery - entering BIOS - Boot Selection ect and just leaves me with F1 or DEL for BIOS press either one nuffin happens NOPE nuffin happens my friend Quote
Tootech Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 but it does not seem to alter the BIOS version. Boo HooIt won't change your BIOS version, only reset to defaults. It may demand a direct flash attempt using a floppy disk. I need to read the manual, will, come back on that later. Quote
zinglebarb Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 hmmmm this Gigabyte board has dual bios. When ive used this before and had a bad bios the second bios took over on its own. What I would try and do is remove the hard drive and optical drive cables . Try and boot the machine press del straight away and see if you get into set up. If you do press f8 and select the boot us bios as secondary. As long as you have not had bios problems before this should start the machine with a virgin bios Auto recover should be on by default so by rights if only one bios is corrupted the other should just take over Quote Q9550 P5Q pro mobo 4 gig pc8500 ATI 4870 Scythe CPU cooler Vista X64 5 HDDs 3 optical OCZ modular psu
spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 K will try that - I changed the battery no avail - took the battery out put the jumper on - no avail i will try your suggestion here goes thank you Quote
spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 Nope nuffin - when it 1st boots it gives me the options but the it is superseeded by Detecting IDE Drives ... CMOS checksum error - DEfaults loaded If your Operation system has install on SATA HDD already. Please check SATA access mode and Hard Disk Boot Priority!! <F1>: to continue, <DEL>: BIOS Setup It basically saying yeah u go ahead and change boot priority but it won't let me in it ...... ggggrrrrrrrr Quote
zinglebarb Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 have you ever updated the bios on this machine before? it appears to me like both main and secondary bios is stuffed (gotta love techical terms eh lol) as I said if the main bios becomes corrupt the second bios should take over . I have seen this work a few times why this feature didnt catch on I dunno. Quote Q9550 P5Q pro mobo 4 gig pc8500 ATI 4870 Scythe CPU cooler Vista X64 5 HDDs 3 optical OCZ modular psu
Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Disconnect the hard drive temporarily and reboot, tell us if you get a "Hard disk not found" error. Quote
spyork Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 (edited) no never updated since i got it which was like only 6 months ago Yep did that - same stuff comes up. Before the update - Win XP was running of my SATA drive - I have no IDE drive installed - and it worked fine - when it runs now the boot up it picks up the SATA drive but then says the same message.
