Question About Roaming Profiles

Hi,

I’m about to upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003. Several of my users play

“musical desks” based on scheduling and workload so I’d like to convert them

from 'local' to 'roaming' profiles.

Will their cached Outlook data (\username\Local Settings\Application

Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.ost) be in the data/files included in their

profile folder on the server? I ask because some of them have rather large

‘.ost’ files and I would like to avoid copying it back and forth with each

login/logoff.

Thanks,

James

You're trying to set up a very complicated situation. On the one hand,

if you let the OST files be saved as part of the roaming profile, you

are guaranteeing a slow logon as well as increasing significantly, the

probability of a corrupted profile. On the other hand, if you don't, I

haven't a clue how you can keep the local OST files in sync...

You can specify the folders that you want excluded from the profile that

is saved as the roaming profile.

Is there a reason why you don't keep the mail on the Exchange server?

It's much preferred over using PST or even OST files....

Re: Question About Roaming Profiles

Hank,

Thanks for your reply. My only real concern is a user’s ‘.ost’ file

(though I’m not sure how some of the other ‘application data’ or ‘local

settings’ will be handled, such as ‘temp’, FireFox ‘internet caches’ or ‘temp

internet files’, which can add up quick).

We keep the e-mail on the Exchange Server, but we also use the ‘Cached

Exchange Mode’ (E-mail Accounts -> More Settings -> Advanced Tab) to provide

instant access to the e-mail messages (we have a lot of attachments and this

speeds things up).

I am not familiar with what will and won’t be included in the ‘roaming

profile’s yet so I haven’t ruled out disabling ‘cached mode’ for these

profiles.

Thanks,

James B

Hi Hank,

I believe that the Local Settings are exactly that - local. They do not

roam with the rest of the profile.

The OST file will end up cached on all the machines the user logs on to.
