no display signal after nvidia mx 400/x1650 pro card upgrade.

Hello, i recently swapped graphics cards- nvidia geforce mx/mx 400 to x1650 pro, and after following the instructions removed the nvidia drivers and installed the x1650 drivers, im left with a black screen. I have read other posts and the power is connected to the card. Any ideas please? Details below:

 

Cpu: AMD Athlon xp 1600+

 

RAM: 256 mb, 7.39 mhz

 

Display: LG Flatron L1719s

 

Windows xp

Hello, i have a black screen from start up. The fan on the card is working. I cant go any further into the installation because i have no screen to guide me, so i had to re install the old drivers.

Is the cable from the monitor in the graphics card or the onboard VGA? If the cable is in the onboard VGA and you have a graphics card in, then you wont have a display. Do you know if the new card works?

Hello again, yes the monitor cable plugs into the new card as it did with the old nvidia card. I have read that others have had some success by installing the new drivers "over" the old ones, but im not sure how that work for me. Should i give it a go? Will it cause any damage?

Even with no drivers installed you should at least be able to boot into windows with the new card.

Uninstall the old drivers, remove the old card, insert new card, install new drivers.

Have you tested the new card to see if it is working?

Have you tried the old card back in the machine? it sounds to me like the new card is doa.

You say the new gfx needs a power connection? if this is the case try booing it without this connection the system should beep . Also the system appears to be old I am guessing the psu is pretty weak also.

 

Also if you do intend to start playing games on your system you need more system memory

The mx400 series was a 2x and 4x AGP card, your new x1650 may be a 4x and 8 x AGP card. The supply voltages are different.

 

Some work, some don't even though they are a different AGP standard.

 

Can you post your motherboard model number, and the make of your x1650 card, and we should be able to check that for you.

IIRC the slots were different and a none compat card should not fit

Agreed.

 

The way I read it that this an Athlon XP 1600, with an MX400 card - it won't be an 8x slot due to its age.

 

That leaves us with at best a 4x slot, or a Universal slot.

 

The x1650 I reckon will be an 8x card. It obviously fits in the slot, so we think it should work.

 

There are some combinations that won't work - I picked up most of the info from this link.

Thanks for the replies, motherboard number info i have is : AGP x8 GA-7VM400M. Card is a powercolor x 1650 pro. AGP. From the previous post it matches the AGP 1.5 profile. I'm starting to get the feeling i may be asking too much from my old workhorse!

does the old card stillwork? I would swap it back and see. Is there anyone who can test the new card? is it new or second user? Perhaps see if a friend has a machine to test it in failing that perhaps at a shop? If you were close enough to me id test it for you but the chances of that are slim lol

Thanks to everyone for your posts, The old card and drivers work fine. The new card is brand new (sealed in the box). I have spoken to the retailer and i will take the card and my comp. to them for installation at no cost. When i find the problem i'll happily post the results incase others have the same problem. Thanks.

problem solved!

 

Hi all, Turns out that my old power supply (powerman FSP235-60GT) wasn't up to the task, putting out a poor 235watts. Minimum for the card would 300watts, 350 to be comfortable. The card works just fine now.Hope this info can help someone.Thanks!
