Cobra Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 OK, I have to get this off my chest before I explode. I cringe and begin to think all kinds of illegal and torturously cruel thoughts when a person titles a post with something like: "PLZZZZZZZZ HELP!!", "HELP ME PLZZZZZ!!", or something just as nondescript and disgustingly pitiful. If I owned a PC help site, a post like that would go straight to the *&^%$#@! can. Thanks, I feel better now......................:D Quote Nothing increases productivity like the last minute....... Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Well some threads could be titled more appropriately Cobra I will admit, but if we were to change the title and then PM the person to inform them of that then we'd be running around like demented chickens all day. Quote
maynardvdm Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 People don't realize that they would get more responses if they used a more descriptive title ;) Quote We are all members helping other members. I surely wasn't suggesting you or anyone else assume the task of re-titling these type posts. That would be akin to punishment. At least one of the help sites 'out there' has a quick and short primer on their rules of engagement. They require the title to reveal the content of a post or they deep six the help request. An excellent way to do business, IMO. You know, something like: "HDD makes grinding noise", "Monitor blew up and took my cat with it", "Smoke billowing out of computer case". Really simple and to the point. Quote Nothing increases productivity like the last minute....... RandyL Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 You are correct Cobra. It would indeed be most helpful to the member, the helpers and the staff if the poster would correctly identify the basic issue in the title. Perhaps some people will see this thread and do just that. Thankyou Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Well that's as maybe but FPCH will never "Deep Six" any requests for help whatsoever, this must be distinctly understood. Quote
Cobra Posted May 29, 2009 Author Posted May 29, 2009 At the risk of belaboring the point, let me say that I had NO intention of trying to modify or suggest changes to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help's SOP (Standard Operating Proceedure) when I made the original post. The subtitle of this section is: "Topics, thoughts, news items, points of view etc that don't fit anywhere else", so I took the opportunity to express my opinion on one of my pet peeves. If I misunderstood the purpose of this portion of your website, let me know and I will no longer share what's on my mind. Personally, it doesn't matter to me HOW the powers that be handle anything @ FreePCHelp, and my intent wasn't to start an adversarial discussion. As a matter of fact, I didn't expect any response or discussion at all. Just a cranky old so-and-so letting off some steam. Quote Nothing increases productivity like the last minute....... Guest Wolfeymole Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Well I think I can say that in the nearly 45,000 posts that have been made on FPCH I can count on one hand the number that have had no reply, trust me on that my good fellow. ;) Should you wish to let off steam on any given occasion feel free to do so Cobra. I see nothing adversarial in your repartee so may I suggest that you ease back and enjoy the view. Live long and prosper. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 well Ok, still on the subject of letting off a bit of steam, we all sometimes feel like going GGGRRRR at someone, but it is part of life in general and not only on the forum. There are many instances of poor thought having gone into a request and the way it is worded. We just have to shout at the monitor, thump the keyboard, and then try to work out how best to help. No point in getting mad at them, they have a problem, they don't understand it, and hope we can. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here. Jelly Bean Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 We must realise there are members out there who do not know what the issue is with there computer. Or that some do not know how to use a forum. Some are desprate for help and will title there thread as they see fit to. We have to give allowances for all forms of computer users and to title a thread HELP PLEASE is a way of showing a little panic or a lot of panic by a member. In this case we should be polite and calm the member and reasure them. To change a title is not appropriate unless it contains a potty word. The more knowing of us should show a little compassion to those who need our help and a title of a thread should not come into it. We have members of all computer levels and of education a little patience goes a long long way. As long as we understand what the member wants help with and if your not sure then ask more questions to figure out the issues and help. Jelly Bean. Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
