Guest Paul Clemmons Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Ok, here is the deal. We have had this Windows 2000 server running for the past 2.5 years. All of a sudden, with nothing added or loaded on the machine, it started to spontaneously freeze up on us. Now I have done a check on all drives, memory, motherboard, power supply so it isn't a hardware issue. What is weird is the first indicator is people being kicked out of Terminal Services and not being able to log back in. All the lights are on the server and everything is spinning correctly and the monitor is not showing anything weird, but the only way to restablish connections again, is to reboot the server. I have looked at the Terminal Services Manager and it shows no one attached. We did have an issue a month ago with McAfee Enterprise running scans and locking up, but I have since removed that so that isn't an issue. It is frustrating the hell out of me and hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction. Additionally, there is no indication of errors leading up to the server stopping, the error logs act like they just restarted the system. Thanks Paul Clemmons PC Networks

No errors show up in any of the Event logs? Try to look back to see if there are any ATAPI errors or warnings. Try disabling third party stuff such as antivirus, antispyware, firewalls, and anything else you can think of and see if that will run awhile. -- Regards, Ace This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights. Guest Paul Clemmons Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Re: Funny thing happening with my Windows 2000 Server I looked back 4 weeks of error logs, no disk or ATAPI errors to be found. Nothing is running that is non Microsoft other than their main application, which is what the Terminal Services is used for. Like I mentioned, there is nothing that I can see as a hardware error. Like I > mentioned, there is nothing that I can see as a hardware error. > Paul RAM can cause this too without warning or signs. Do you have some RAM you can swap out to test it? Sometimes a third party browser plug in can cause it too. Numerous things can cause a server to reboot without warning, however unfortunately difficult to track unless you can look back and ask yourself what changed since it started happening. Check this out to see what I mean: http://www.google.com/search?q=server+reboots+without+warning&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7ITVA Could also be an undetected virus or spyware. Have you run a full AV scan and a full antispyware scan? Besides recommending to install Windows Defender, Webroot makes a great antispyware product to run along side Defender. Ace

Guest Paul Clemmons Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Re: Funny thing happening with my Windows 2000 Server I did just remove RealVNC from the system after this last crash. It wasn't allowing me in anyway so I took it out.
