Slow printing Windows Server 2003

Server: Windows Server 2003 R2

Workstations: Windows XP Pro SP2

The server is set up as a print server and for file sharing. Two

printers are shared, one is an old HP600 DesignJet, the other is an HP

CP1700. The HP600 responds normally. The CP1700 is very slow to

respond. Opening up the properties window and/or printing (very small

files) can take between 8-12 seconds.

I don't know if this matters, but most of our printing is done through

AutoCAD 2004 and 2007.

Thanks

Hi Fuzed,

This could just be tied to the size of the print jobs and the memory on the

printer. I have seen issues like this before. Also, if you are using a PCL6

driver, you might try backrev-ing to a PCL5 driver if you have many different

client types. Sometimes there are issues with that.

I'll look into the driver, but I doubt it's the file size. Even

opening the printer's properties window takes too long.

Thanks

Your issue reminded me of a problem I was seeing where Acrobat was converting

2MB documents to 600MB for printing. The driver ended up being the issue.

Re: Slow printing Windows Server 2003

>>> Big processing print files better done at the WS vs the Server for

an inkjet device like that unit.

I would try at the WS printing to file, and then put that file onto a

shared spool folder, like Z:\Spool ...then at the server run a spooler

program to send it over to the device. Herein an old post to interpolate...

Setup a C:\Spool Folder on YOUR PC and Share to all on network. Then

get printfile (via http://www.lerup.com/printfile/ ) and set it up as a

spooler with a link in the startup folder, to search for all files in

C:\Spool and send to local HP 810C printer. Next all other PC's setup

HP 810C System Printer (for that PC's O/S) as PRINT TO FILE (via port

settings). Next map a netshare drive as Y: to YOUR PC's C:\Spool

Folder. Then tell Users when printing to HP 810C, type in Y:\ and give

a basic name like, file.prn or plot.plt ...then hit enter and away the

print file goes to the spool folder, then the printfile grabs it and

sends it off to the printer!

Or get a print spooler and connect it to the LAN and the device's USB.

Ciao!
