Very slow to open folders with 20,000 files

In the office there are a series of folders on the server, each folder

containing 15,000 - 25,000 (or more) .jpg files. When any of the clients

double click on a folder to open there is a long pause - up to 20 seconds -

before the folder will open. Thumbnails are not cached, and there is no

significant load on the server.

Is there anything I can do to speed things up?

Hello Wowbagger" Wowbagger~~,

What speed is you network running 10/100/1000Mbit? Are all devices (server, router, switches, workstations)

capable of the same speed and configured for it?

Best regards

At one time years ago, I had a folder that has more than 20,000 files for

our users. It did the same thing. Why? The system needs to enumerate each

and every object before it presents it to you. You can purchase faster

drives, controllers, optimize Windows and hardware caching and a number of

other things, but in the end, you still have 20,000 objects that need to be

enumerated each time the parent folder is opened.

What to do about it? Organize the resources a little better. What did I do

to speed things up? I organized them by dividing them up by clients/jobs.

Then in each client/job folder, I created alphabetical folders. I created 26

folders, one for each of the alpabet (US English). I actually saved the

first one I created as a template so I can copy/paste it to each new

client/job folder that we needed to create for future clients instead of

having to manually create them each time. It speeded things up where the

systems immediately opened up the alpabetized folders.

I hope that helps.

All but one of the workstations is at 100Mb using a 100Mb switch (HP model

in the wiring closet down the hall). The one oddball is a workstation that

has a 1Gb NIC that is plugged into into the Gb switch into which the server

is also plugged (the server also has a Gb card).

I'll add just that onto my list of things to do. I receive several hundred

new photos every day so sorting them by client isn't practical, but I can

break up the letters of the alphabet to an extent.

Whichever way you choose, you will find the system will enumerate the

folders much quicker.

Cheers!
