Terminal Services licensing and fault tolerance

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have four Citrix Presentation server 4 servers, on Windows 2003 TS. They

are load ballanced(by a network). I am thinking about fault tolerance from a

TS licensing point of view. Currently the Citrix licenses and TS user CALs

are on sever 1.

Lets say server 1 has a hardware failure. I am okay on Citrix licensing, as

the remaining Citrix servers have a 96 hour grace period. What about TS

licensing, is there a grace period?

Would I be better splitting licensing between two servers?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Re: Terminal Services licensing and fault tolerance

There's no real grace period for TS Licensing, but in practice,

there is one (sort of..).

Clients start renewing their licenses 7 days prior to the actual

date of expiration. So if all clients connect to the server every

day, you'll have a week to get the server up and running again

before te licenses actually expire.

Clients with a valid (non-expired) license do not need a connection

to the TS Lic4ensing Server at al, because the terminal Server sees

the valid license and doesn't check with the LS at all.

So if your LS goes down, only those clients which haven't connected

for more than 7 days AND have an expired license will be refused,

all other clients will be able to connect.

That said, a second TS LS for redundancy gives your more time and

ensures connection for all clients.

Check here for more info:

Q. How do I configure Terminal Services Licensing servers for

redundancy or high availability?
