bikerxxuk Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Hi guys, I am hoping that you can help with my driver problem on my laptop. OK, so here it is. My CD/DVD drive has stopped working on my laptop. It opens when you press the button and spins up when you put a disc in but that is all. The system is not seeing it. It is not there in My Computer. But it is listed in Device Manager with a yellow (!) telling me that a driver is needed. Now I know what to do, but it is not working. I try to update the driver by letting it look on the net, by pointing at my recovery disc (copied to a external hard drive) but it does not find a driver. I have tried rolling back driver but that won't have it either. I have tried system restore but that won't work. (It says unable to restore...) I have tried googling the model number and laptop model. I have found one driver, but it won't install, it's saying wrong operating system even though it was the right one (XP). The Compaq / HP website for the laptop model does not even list a driver at all for a DVD drive. ! Select software and drivers*# I have tried the live help - who were no help at all see text Steve S : Need driver for the dvd drive hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-4082n Can't find it listed on your website. wellies Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) Windows should detect the drive and install a driver. No other driver necessary. I note in instruction '4 and 5' of the Compaq page under the 'Uninstall and reinstall drivers in Device Manager' is says not to restart the computer but let Windows re-scan the system for the drive. It probably amounts to the same thing but my own method of getting a driver to reinstall is to delete it in Device Manager and then re-start the computer. Windows should detect and reinstall the drive on start-up. If this doesn't solve the problem, Microsoft has a support page for it that applies to XP. It contains an automatic and a manual fix. If nothing else has worked up to now, I'd be inclined to try the automatic fix. Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs Edited May 31, 2009 by wellies Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. zinglebarb Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 That auto fix should work and all it does is the same as the manual fix. I quite often write my own reg entries or steal them from tweek sites lol and make a .reg file to install it instead of searching the keys lol Quote Q9550 P5Q pro mobo 4 gig pc8500 ATI 4870 Scythe CPU cooler Vista X64 5 HDDs 3 optical OCZ modular psu
