This could be because of several issues:

What exactly is giving the message, is it a windows dialog or your

Anti-virus software or something else?

Your anti-virus software performs an active scan during a restoration,

if the scan finds infection within the restore files it tries to clean them,

if unsuccessful it will block the restoration.

If it is your anti-virus software preventing a restore (and it sounds like

it is).

You can try this:

Logon to the update site for your anti-virus and perform a manual update

of virus definitions to bring it fully uptodate.

Then disconnect from internet.

Then *disable* your anti-virus software and then try a system restore point.

If the system restore works but it was a virus, you have now restored PC

to a contaminated state.

Open your anti-virus and perform a full scan, with luck your uptodate

anti-virus will catch and clean any infection that was hidden in the restore

files.

There is of course the outside risk that the virus cannot be cleaned out,

though your anti-virus will identify it and you will have at least the

details

to post here for me to try and figure.

But, if you have a good AV application installed and you have brought

it uptodate, it will catch any infection that you restore.

Another option is that system restore points are corrupt.

Was there a specific reason you need to try a system restore?

A way of clearing corrupt system restore is to disable it and then

re-enable, but of course you lose all existing restore points.

If you disable/re-enable you lose all existing restore points

but it clears the corruption and starts afresh.

Is there a specific reason you want to perform a system restore?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264887/en-us

Be sure that you are aware that if you disable/re-enable you will

lose all existing restore points.

> iam running Avast antivirus shall i follow yr steps ???

I am not familiar with the freeware Avast software.

Is it uptodate as of the last few minutes?

If you perform a system restore with Avast disabled

and it was a virus, it will then be active in the restored

settings. Reactivating Avast and scanning should catch

it, but it is not 100% gauranteed. At the very least it will

identify the virus (if any).

Be sure you are aware of the reprecussions if you opt

for this route.

Print this or make note of following:

Boot into Safe Mode

To do this, repeatedly tap F8 key on start

A menu will apear

Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight "Safe Mode"

Then hit the enter key, XP will load to safe mode

It will be of lower resolution and the legend "Safe Mode"

will appear in each corner of the screen.

Then disable your Avast anti-virus so that it is not actively monitoring,

then do the system restore.

Once (and if) the restore is successful, then re-enable Avast and

perform a full scan.

If it still fails to system restore in safe mode:

GoTo: Start/Run

and type: eventvwr.msc/s

A dialog will appear headed: Event Viewer

To the left click on "Services"

Then in the right pane scroll and locate any listed errors

for todays date.

They will be obvious and marked with a red X.

On each error double-click and a dialog will appear

detailing what the error is.

Make a note of the error(s) and post back details.

In Safe Mode

RIGHT click "My Computer"

From the sub menu select "Manage"

A dialog will appear

Expand "Services and Applications"

Click on "Services"

Then in right pane scroll and locate: "System Restore Service"

Click on it once so as to highlight

In left pane click on the blue highlighted: "Stop the service"

Close all windows

Now RIGHT click "My Computer"

From sub-menu select "Properties"

Click the System Restore tab

Ensure "Turn off system restore on all drives" is selected.

Click "Apply" and "OK" buttons

Close all windows and Reboot

Upon reboot retrace your steps and re-enable system restore

Did you run event viewer?

Do you have a windows XP installation disc?

Have you backed up your data - to external HDD or DVD discs?

You will have to do a repair or full reinstall of XP.

System restore failure coupled with unable to boot to safe mode

indicates something is very wrong .

Google the term:

"A recent hardware or software change might have caused this"

You will see that is is a standard windows error for when it dosen't

know what is wrong. It could be malware, registry corruption,

hardware or memory failure, etc etc.

It's not clear what problems you were having prior to your initial

post about system restore, but I suspect you were receiving many

error messages and problems etc..any details you can supply?

If you don't have a WinXP installations disc, your PC will either

have a restore partition or supplied with recovery discs. But first..

Back up data to external HDD or DVD's.

Run Event Viewer and post back details of errors.

http://tinyurl.com/ysttsa

XP has some basic tools you can try:

Detect + Repair disk errors

http://tinyurl.com/ysttsa

Recovery Console

http://tinyurl.com/ysttsa

But the bottomline is XP will have to be reinstalled on your PC.

Run it in Windows normal

GoTo: Start/Run

A dialog will appear headed: Event Viewer

To the left click on "Services"

Then in the right pane scroll and locate any listed errors

They will be obvious and marked with a red X.

So it does actually boot from the XP disc?

I'll try and find what that error message means.

Try this:

Load the XP cd into tray, then Shutdown - not reboot or restart.

Then start PC - it should boot from the XP disc -

if it does, don't do anything yet, but post back what exactly is

displayed onscreen.

I'll recheck this group this afternoon - 4- 5 hours.

Have you made any changes to BIOS settings?

Was your current XP configuration pre-installed on PC?

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Re: system restore is not able to protect your computer

Hi

Somethings are very obviously wrong on your PC:

"my operating system is within the recover cd

for validation purpose" (Maybe it said "Recovery" CD?)

That error message I cannot find, but it seems to indicate

that there maybe some type of propriatary configuration,

(I know Dell have a whole box of propriatary settings on

their PC's, what make is yours?)

Do you have administrator rights on that PC?

Are there other password protected users of that PC?

Can you make any correlation with the system restore

problem first starting and any change you made to PC -

Install/Uninstall hardware and/or software etc.

Have you perfomed a full scan with uptodate anti-virus software,

Do you have a fully functioning firewall installed or are you

relying on XP's basic one-way firewall.

Do you have malware tools installed such as:

Spybot (freeware)

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/

Ad-Aware

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

(Click the green download button for the freeware ad-aware)

You have an XP disc so next we will try this:

You have to be logged in as Administrator or Owner.

Goto Start/Run, type: sfc /scannow and click OK.

During the scan you may be prompted to insert the XP cd..

This is an overview of the scannow tool

Re: system restore is not able to protect your computer

For whatever it's worth

I was reading this thread and tried

eventvwr.msc/s

and also got the not found message.

I don't have any problems, just thought I should tell you.

I'm running XP and have kept up to date with the updates.
