Paging File and Diskpart

I have Windows 2003 Sever, Standard Edition. I’m running out of space on my

hard drive and the system is slowing down. I have an array controller with a

RAID 1 system already in place with two physical drives and one logical

drive. I want to expand and extend the array to four physical drives and

maintain one logical drive. To complete this task, after I install the hard

drives and configure the array, which should not be a problem, I understand

that I have to use Diskpart.exe from the command prompt to configure Disk

Management in the Computer Management console. I foresee one looming problem

which is that the logical drive is not partitioned, i.e., it has only one

partition, and according the Diskpart instuctions (Article ID : 325590), “You

cannot extend the partition if the system page file is located on the

partition [you want to extend]. Move the page file to a partition that you

do not wish to extend.” Since I only have one partition, there is no other

partition to which to move the paging file. Is there a solution to this?

And where is the paging file located anyway?

The paging file is by default c:\Pagefile.sys - use Explorer to

see it! Since diskpart does not deal with the system drive,

there is no need for you to worry. At the same time I don't

see how you can use diskpart to have one drive (drive C:?)

spread over four disks - as I said: diskpart won't touch the

system drive.

In a server environment you should use drive C: for Windows

and for your applications. Drive D: should contain your data.

Thank you for your response, which was helpful. I'd like to follow your

suggestion of having another logical drive for my data; however, my C: drive

does not have any unallocated space. I can create a logical drive on the

array controller just using unused space on my hard drive (different from

unallocated space), but then the directions read "To make newly created

logical drives available for data storage, use the operating system disk

management tools to create partitions and format the drives." This brings me

back the the problem of not having any unallocated space on the hard drive,

since I believe I need this to create a partition/logical drive. Is there a

way to create a partition on the drive even though I don't have unallocated

space?

Re: Paging File and Diskpart

You have to use one of the many partition managers, e.g. Acronis

DiskDirector. Make sure to back up your important files first, and

to perform a test recovery of the backed up files.

Re: Paging File and Diskpart

Thank you again. I went to the Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 web page

where they have supported operating systems listed. They have Windows XP but

not Windows Server 2003. Would you happen to know if this software works on

Windows Server 2003?

Re: Paging File and Diskpart

Never mind. On another page of the Acronis web site, it states that it works

with Windows Server 2003 SP1. I have SP2, but I'm assuming it will still

work. Thank you again.
