Custom Default User Profile

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've created a custom default user profile as described in KB # 325364. It

works well except... EVERYONE gets the same "My Documents" name -- that of

the local user account I created (i.e., "Joe Blow" was the user so now every

new user that gets this "custom default user profile" has a "Joe Blows

Documents" folder under their user account name). I'm not able to rename

these to the actual user's name. Any ideas? Note that I am NOT running AD.

Would that "fix" things or is this an issue that's beyond that?

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Custom Default User Profile

Run regedit, then load the \default user hive ntuser.dat and check that all

names in "User Shell Folders" are type Reg_Expand_Sz and that they are

preceded with %USERPROFILE%

my hive\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell

Folders

Re: Custom Default User Profile

Dave,

THANK YOU SO MUCH for responding to my posting. I'm sure this will get me

where I need to be as far as getting back the user profiles. However, I need

to do some research as to how, exactly, to do this. I've done regedits in

the past but never anything with the hives. When I tried to bring up the

hive for the default user, I got a message that said to enter the key name.

Once I get past this, I'll probably be able to figure things out based on

your information.

Thank you again SO MUCH!

Rick

Re: Custom Default User Profile

We only need a temporary key name to load the hive. When you're done editing

navigate back to the tempname and choose Unload Hive.

Re: Custom Default User Profile

Hi Dave,

Thank you again for taking the time to respond to these posts. I'm getting

a little frustrated with this issue so knowing there's someone out there that

has some answers is GREAT.

I've done what you suggested and find that all the names are preceeded by

%USERPROFILE%. So... I've gone back and logged on as a general user. I see

that, as a general user my documents are listed as "My Documents." However,

as an administrator, I see they're listed as "Joe Blow's Documents" (from the

profile I copied to make the default profiles).

I've tried renaming the default profile's "my documents" folder back to "My

Documents." Windows reverts it right back to "Joe Blow's Documents."

Grrrrr! HOWEVER, if I rename the "Joe Blow's Documents" to "My Documents"

(two spaces between 'My' and 'Documents'), it stays listed as "My

Documents". Any ideas on what to make of that and how to correctly fix it?

Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Custom Default User Profile

The Reg_Sz values found in;

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

should resolve to the expanded Reg_Expand_Sz values stored in;

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

you might have a look to see what you find.
