IanOtt Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 PC crashes after about 10 - 20 mins when playing high spec games such as Far Cry 2, Empire Total War etc, no issues on low spec games such as Rome or Far cry. All power switches off with no error code or warnings. Able to re-boot and restart for about same time and then crashes I have changed power supply to 750w was 400w Changed grahics card to Geforce 9600GT Display Memory: 512.0 MB System still crashes Current system is: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. System Model: GA-MA69GM-S2H BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.9GHz Memory: 2046MB RAM Any ideas? Quote
Tootech Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Hi Ian, Does it only crash when you are playing games? I'm wondering if it is a heat issue, it may be worth monitoring your temps and see that they get to. Also, there maybe a CPU shutdown temp set in the BIOS, its worth having a look to see of it is enabled, and if so what temp it is set to. Do you have an exhaust fan in your system? Quote
IanOtt Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Tootech many thanks for reply Yes only when playing games. This does look like an overheat problem, took side off played game for last 50 mins to powerdown. Will check out shutdown trip setting on CPU overheat in BIOS Have an exhaust fan on tower. Again many thanks will let you know how I get on Quote
IanOtt Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 Tootech checked BIOS all warnings were disabled have now enabled: System temp warning for: 90 Deg C CPU warning temp: 80 Deg C Does not appear to be a shutdown trip level set in BIOS but would imagine this is factory set...... Have left side panel off tower and will monitor temps. Is there some kind of cooler that I can retro fit? When I had rebooted to get into BIOS system and CPU temps only 42 Deg C Quote

wellies Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 On balance, the fault does seem temperature related. However, there is one niggling point that says it may not be. That's the fact that you are able to reboot and play the game for about the same length of time. You'd think the computer might go for less time on reboots because the components wouldn't have had much of a chance to cool down. If all settings are OK, a quick test to see if the fault is due to overheating would be to leave the side cover off the computer and point an ordinary household room fan at the insides. Play the game and see if the computer lasts longer before crashing. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Plastic Nev Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I also wondered about the fact that it will quickly reboot and continue for a similar length of time. The only explanation I have for that would be the length of time taken for all parts of the system to turn on and start running after a reboot, before you start using it again. This time could allow the heat build up to dissipate enough. I would be looking at better cooling fans on both the CPU and the GFX, just in case those you have aren't quite up to the job. Especially so as you say it lasts longer with the covers off, this points also at the exhaust fan not clearing perhaps a warm spot in the case. Have a look at air flow inside and if there are any obvious obstructions such as cable bundles etc. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Jelly Bean Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Power off the computer let it coo down and give internals a good clean. Download and run Speedfan and post screen shot of the temps please: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
